How to tell what safety wire size to use? (oil filter)

Post by cfiatzph »

In general what is the recommended way to tell what size of safety wire to use? I once got the answer what ever size will fill up the hole the most. More specfically what size wire to use on a oil filter?
Thanks

Safety wire

Avionics techs use .020
Copper breakaway wire for emergency switches/guards
Mechs/Engs use .032
Props use .040/.041
No absolutes but a good guide
For what it's worth I once had to use .063 for a refueling boom on a KC-10 during my Douglas Aircraft Flight Test days. Stuff was like coat hanger.

Here's a link to AC43.13-1B regarding safety wire in general. Paragraph 7-122 and onward.

Copper and brass can also be used on cable turnbuckles provided it is a thickness of at least 0.040" (AC43.13-1B Table 7-8). I have only found it on one plane, ironically a C170. It is still available but costs 2X+ more than stainless.
