oops Now need a B model MLG
Lost left brake in flight on June 22, unbeknownst to me. Landed at Chandler, AZ. 22R and promptly ground looped to the right at appx 15mph. Needless to say I'm gonna need a 170B (no lady legs please) MLG strut. Headed up to CHND on 29 June to load the ole girl on a trailer. Would like to start the replacement in the next few weeks. Anybody got one and at what price? Closer is better but I'll take it anyway I can get it. Thanx

The non-lady-legs should be easy to find. (I have a set in the hangar myself.) Which side(s) do you need? (Hint: they are interchangeable.)

Sorry to hear....When you get it repaired add the following to your downwind checklist - "check toe-brakes for pressure". I've done that check since the late 70's on everything I fly. Just a light toe tap and your set and prepared for whatever landing you may have to accomplish.phantomphixer wrote:Lost left brake in flight on June 22, unbeknownst to me. What was the cause of the lost brake?
Do you still have the original parking brake parts installed? If so, it might have been the right brake that hung up.
I don't want to second guess you. I'm just curious what caused the brake to fail.
Glad you got out OK with minimal damage.

I see you list a 55 mdl. If so, they are the lady legs if not mistaken.

Re: oops Now need a B model MLG
George, Need the left MLG. Let me know the price. Left brake leaked out. Repaired a few weeks ago. Flew last sunday, no problem. Well I thought I had it repaired. It's got Clevelands. Poked right brake to get back on center line going about 15mph. Just kept going right until oops. Left brake went to the firewall. Parking brake disconnected. Had that hang up 10 years ago or so.
So the ole girl needs an outer wheel half, new tire(s), and my pride fixed, plus the MLG. Figure while it's down I'll fix some hangar rash and repaint the leading edges. She's starting to show primer thru the LE paint. Too hot to fly here until late Sept anyway.

Re: oops Now need a B model MLG
Compared to a 170 the "B" model has the heavier /thicker gear. Am I wrong on this? Got a 170 here on the field and it has the thinner legs and they are splayed out. George, sort this out for me/us. Don't have my parts manual with me.
Thanx

There are two types of MLG
The earlier ones were thicker (wider) at the based and had a 'splayed' look when on the ground. These were the same for both sides and as such, interchangeable.
The later ones were the Lady Legs and visually quite different.

PN 0541114 ( Serials 20267 to 25611) Either Side
PN 0541118-3 ( Serials 25612 & up) Left Side
PN 0541118-2 ( Serials 25612 & up) Left Side
Hope this helps

The first B mdl was 1952. It had the earlier splayed out legs. They might have changed to the lady leg in the early 53 but someone will know.

Re: oops Now need a B model MLG
You've been given all the correct info. All 170s, 48, A model and B model (Serials 20267 to 25611) came from the factory with the same gear. B models after 25612 came with the new style gear called lady legs because of the narrowing at the "ankle" when compared to the old style.
The problem we have is that landing gear changes where and are popular and when you add the 180 gear options they are sometimes hard to identify what you have regardless what the plane came with. The early gear and the later gear are pretty easy to identify from each other though.

Re: oops Now need a B model MLG
The later "lady legs" were first issued starting with SN 25612, a "mid-'53" model.
But some later airplanes who suffered ground loops were owned by people who may not have remained "correct" with replacement gear....there are numerous stories of folks who thought they had "lady legs" ...but in fact had an airplane whose original legs were changed out to earlier gear....and some earlier airplanes were converted to "lady legs"...and some airplanes have 180/185 gear legs.
Early gear legs appear to bow inwardly...and are interchangeable left/right...while lady legs bow outwardly and are "handed" (not interchangeable.)
It is important to examine the legs to identify what you have. Bruce's illustration above should help you.
