Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still slow
My aircraft recently quit charging, additionally after pulling the alternator and having it tested (was fine), and replacing the voltage regulator the starter doesn't seem to have enough power to turn over the engine properly. I tried two different batteries, removed both RF filters, replaced all the alternator wires but the ground, tried jumping directly to the starter, tried a brand new starter and its still week to turn. I have got the prop flipping and the engine running once and the alternator still wasn't charging. It seems to me there is something else going on here and I am running out of ideas. Oh I cleaned all the contacts too.... Anybody ever seen something like this before?

Bad connection someplace. Check the voltage at the starter terminal while cranking.

Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
If the 210 is wired like the original 170, there are too many connections in the ground path from battery to firewall to engine mount to engine to starter motor. I solved some problems by adding a ground wire directly from the battery negative terminal to the engine case.

Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
Lotta unknowns....but that angle drive on the starter can mask starter problems.
The fly in the ointment is the charging problem.
Until you solve that......you have complicated matters.
Also.....its it truely a NEW battery? or merely a different one?

Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
Definitely sounds like a wiring problem to me. You say you have already checked ground connections. I would say make sure you didn't miss any grounds connections, then check your POS+ cables as well. They could have higher than normal resistance due to internal corrosion caused my moisture being held in by it's insulation. Do any of the cables get hot during start attempts? How did you check connections? They need to be checked with a multi-meter, not just visually. The cables need to be checked with the meter also. A high resistance on any of the connections or cables, is of course a problem.
Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
The reason I am suggesting a cable is because it can cause both problems.
Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
With a battery load tester, you can check the load draw at the starter positive to ground thru battery connections and start eliminating any possible connections or cables.

Thanks guys, you gave me a bunch of great ideas, I will keep you informed as to what I find.
Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
Can anybody tell me if there should be voltage on the Field terminal of the VR, with the master switch turned on and the engine NOT running?

You can find the answers you want in one of the troubleshooting guides on the Zeftronics web site: (http://www.zeftronics.com/). Click on "Troubleshooting" on the left-hand side of the page, and find the appropriate one for the equipment you've got. I've always found these exceptionally helpful. Good luck!

Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
Ok, now I am really lost. All new wires and I have the same result. Tried jump starting from my truck and starter spins faster/harder but minimal rotation. I am wondering if it can be in the angle drive like George said. Possibly a spring in there or something?
Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
To be clear: When you try to start the engine, the starter motor runs, the prop moves some, but then stops, but the starter motor keeps running even after the prop stops? If so, that's a sign of a slipping starter adapter (the right-angle starter drive thing). I hope I'm wrong because fixing it is not cheap.
Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
Niagra Air Parts will exchange the adaptor.
