Alaska Bush Wheels
Thinking about putting some Ak Bush wheels on my 53 170b, but not sure what size would be best. I would like to put the 29"-13-6 on so can land on gravel??????? Anyway sure would like to hear some opinions if anybody has them on theirs. I have heard comments that they can have problems with the "side wall" issue's with Cessna 180's. I'm not sure what they are refering to? Dont want to get the wrong size and regret it.
Re: Alaska Bush Wheels
Some oversized tire sidewalls are sufficiently flexible at their low pressures as to interfere with brake calipers, etc. There was a very recent discussion on this matter just last week.

Re: Alaska Bush Wheels
The "side wall issues" with Bushwheels are centered around the 31", not the 29". The 31" are very "mushy" on sloping terrain such as beaches and will give the impression the plane might roll over but it won't, especially with the lighter weight of the 170. 29" will work just fine on a 170 but I hesitate to give too much advice lest someone else chime in to say my opinion is not as good as their opinion, which the last I heard, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Take all the advice and make your own opinion and decision.
Not an opinion; the 31" are not approved on the C-185 so if you ever might want to resell them, the 31" will have a more limited market. Most of the Cub guys like the 31".

Re: Alaska Bush Wheels
Contact Bill or Wup at Alaska Bush Wheel. They are the experts. Wup recomended the 29" for us if we decided to go with the larger bush wheels, (not the 31"). They know their buisness, and are honest and forthright with their knowledge and experience. They also are in contact with the pilots that use these tires the most. Jon
Re: Alaska Bush Wheels
Thanks, I did E-mail Bill but have not heard anything from him yet. I,m fairly sure I will be getting the 29" Bushwheels. I talked to a freind who has the 29" on his 185 and seems to be happy with them. I have thought about the 26" but think I would be happier with the 29". A little extra tire is always nice. I'm getting some newly o/h early 180 gear to go on as well and have a P-ponk already.
