Re: Thoughts on Upcoming Annual

Hollow $teel axles are certainly stronger than any aluminum axles…including the solid aluminum, so-called “ski” axles (which EveryOne should have at the very minimum. If anyone has hollow Aluminum axles they should replace them with either solid aluminum or hollow $teel.) However, Bob, I would not r...

Re: Memorial Day - the Most Expensive Holiday

Here’s some Memorial Day visuals… Imagine …you’re a conscripted soldier…told to sit on a wooden box in a throw-away wood-and-fabric glider … guided by a two-week-wonder glider-pilot…. to be towed and abandoned over unknown territory …hopefully to survive a once-in-a-lifetime landing on a non-airport...

Memorial Day - the Most Expensive Holiday

The real meaning of the Memorial-Day holiday is meant to honor all U.S. soldiers who have Died serving their country…. Who gave up the Most Precious Possession they had. (Veterans Day celebrates those who have Served.) Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day's history goes back to the Civil ...

Re: Tailwheel tie down ring - winch point

A full-stall landing will almost always result in the tailwheel touching down first,..at least it does when I attempt it with full flaps.

Gerald…did you read the most recent issue of 170 News.. ?

Steve Grimsley wrote a very good article on this very subject of re-sealing your Delco-Remy starter (pg 14): https://cessna170.org/download/24/170-n ... 2024-2.pdf

Re: Throttle repair question

That split-ring is for assembly during manufacture.

Yes, if you applied silicone that likely removed the friction the split-ring is intended to provide. Alcohol or electronic cleaner might restore it.

Re: Tailwheel tie down ring - winch point

MIles is describing the correct set-up angle of the “Kingpin” …. To avoid “shimmy”….the Kingpin angle should be as illustrated by the GREEN line… not the red lines. (one of the few times Green is Good on a 170) This angle is established by the tailwheel Main Leaf Spring. If yours is sagging, t...

Re: Cigarette Lighter

The “cigarette” lighter SOCKET is made of two parts (I’m not discussing the heater-element which originally plugged-into the socket and which almost no one uses anymore) The two parts are the “socket” and the “Socket case” The Socket is threaded into the case. Simply disconnect the wiring, then gras...

Re: Had a bad day, need parts

Thank you for the advice, I’m SN 20299 and I do have the dog house/clam shell cowl. I think this will be one of the hardest parts to find or have made. I see the nose bowl on univair but the shaping of the top and bottom cowling will be tricky. Not promoting it….. but…might be an opportunity to con...

Re: Had a bad day, need parts

This is another chance to get the incorrect parts….. When you say you need parts for a ‘52 170-B… It ‘s better to use the Serial Number when shopping for parts. What popped out at me was your search for cowling. The cowling changed during the 1952 production-year…because by the end of that year…Cess...

Textron Extends Warranty on Parts

I’ve rec’d an email from Textron (Cessna, Beech, etc) that a New Warranty Policy has been instituted… that Parts bought from Textron are now Warranted for 12 months… increased from the previous policy of 6-months. That’s nice. It still doesn’t mean any of us will be able to purchase engine mount bus...

Re: Cessna 170A Restoration w/TLGW Cont IO-360 STC

One other item to consider while you have it in process is a new windshield. Not a huge task, but I'm sure it would be easier depending on your state of disassembly. I'm also a big fan of the door stewards I added. Super easy and great for a tail dragger. I left the door catch at the top of the doo...

Re: Cessna 170A Restoration w/TLGW Cont IO-360 STC

The 180/185 gear adds 11-14 lbs of weight. I wouldn’t like that…but most folks who go to the IO-360 are so impressed by the horsepower/performance increase …I think they disregard/forget about that. But remember… the Gross Weight is not allowed to be increased…so the modifications Really Eat into th...
