Re: Fun trip...

I've been making plans to fly from Minneapolis to Anchorage two weeks from now, but my 170 with three of us aboard doesn't have enough useful load to carry the required survival gear. John John, It sounds like at least one of your group needs to start looking for another 170! It's a challeng...

Even though I'm not a float pilot (yet) I'm sure this has been repeated too many times:

The plastic companys that manufacture aircraft windshields and windows of acrylic plastic claim that Pledge is detrimental to the surface of acrylics and do not recommend its use. My guess is that that the plastic companys haven't tested it and are just covering their posteriors. (Can't say that I ...

George,

Would it be worth the trouble to elevate the tail for those times when you want to make sure this area drains? Or if trapped oil is immediately aft of the plug, maybe suction out this area somehow?

I'm not sure if it's the geometry of the carburetor intake tee cast into the sump, or just that theres a low spot around the drain boss, but a small small amount of oil (along with acids, sludge, etc) does get trapped in the fowardmost section of the sump. It's not at all uncommon to have the forwar...

Here around Tehachapi and Mojave (CA), 20-25 knots is not uncommon. The local joke is that we don't start calling it "wind" until 15 knots. Out of necessity I've taxied in low 20's gusting to low 30's, and these wind speeds seem to be pretty much within the envelope. While I’ve he...

Sounds like it would be a good idea to NOT install the air-oil separator on the firewall, but install it per Ken Morrow's article, then maybe insulate it to keep the water and acids in vapor form so they don't return to the engine. Since I would no more want to plumb my anus to the belly of my airpl...

AOPA Pilot Letter to the Editor

I got my June issue of AOPA Pilot magazine yesterday. In the Letters to the Editor section, the first letter, written by a Lt. Col. in the USAF, comments on the "Flights of Fantasy" article in the April issue. I don't have the article with me, so I can't quote exactly, but he mentions that...

Congratulations, Lance! It's great to hear that you are about to get going again. I'm the one that bought your old C-145 FWF back in '01. Thought you might like to know it's still running strong. I'ts up to 1700 hours SMOH and still leaking as much oil as ever (keeps the mount from rusting :) ), but...

I recieved my free sample of Extreme Simple Green last week, but I wanted to let this thread play out more before I used it. Well, the fact that the independent lab said it was OK on 2024 is good enough for me. I stopped by the airport on the way home this evening and tried it out. I have to say I a...

Sad News in Tehachapi

For those of you who attended the 2004 Cessna 170 Convention in Tehachapi, one of the Tehachapi Society of Pilots (TSP) volunteers who helped with the convention throughout the week, Bob Hedlund, was killed when his Bellanca crashed last Friday May 20. Bob had had some maintenance performed on the B...

There was an article in the Third Quarter of 2004 170 News, I think it was a reprint, about installing a 160 horse IO-320-B1A in a 170. The author goes on quite a bit about the increased speed but doesn't say much about climb. Personally I can live with 120 MPH but when I have a someone in the pass...
