Vintage 170 Advertising

I'd like to collect some vintage 170 advertising. Trouble is when I'm at a flea market and see a pile of old magazines I don't have the time nor does the owner want me there paging through all those dusty delicate issues. Would be nice to know what publications and dates to look for.

I know some of you have some of this advertising. So look on the wall at that framed Cessna 170 ad you have and give us the publications name and date which is usually somewhere on the page or maybe back page.

Hi Bruce,

I stumbled upon several issues of Flying magazine from 1952 -1953 at a used book store. They have an abundance of Cessna ads.

I have the 1952 February Flying magazine that features a debut article on the 170B.
Plus a bunch of advertisements for the 170 were included in my airplane's paperwork, although I would have preferred more 337s

I can scan them all and send them along.
Here is the back cover of the magazine

Google to the rescue

Seems they have every issue back to November 1927 online!

Cool link! I clicked on the photo of the October 1952 issue and found a 170 ad on page 5. It shows what I assume is a drawing of a 170 in flight. I notice that the wheel pants are drawn level in the flight attitude. Photos of a 170 on the ground show the wheel pants mounted level with respect to the ground, so they should be angled downward in flight. The angle should be correctly established by the mounting plates, if they are the correct part. Maybe if 172 mounting plates are used, the wheel pants would appear as drawn in that ad, but of course those parts didn't exist in 1952 (or did they?). :D

Flying Magazine December 1955

"Our purpose in bringing out the 172 is to supplement and not replace the present 170."

..Yeah right :?

I take that at FULL FACE VALUE! The 172 can NEVER replace a 170! 8)

What an amazing resource! Those old magazines were so different than today's. Much more adventure and storytelling and much less glitz and form. So much of the content is first person accounts from the golden age of aviation (for lack of a better term). Interestingly, the first issue I picked, January 1954, has an editorial about user fees, and why fuel taxes are a better way to fund the system.

Based on this window to the past, I'd say BL is right, those were the good old days!

BL thinks those were the "good ol' days" because back then.....penicillin would cure anything!

Almost anything! I vividly remember one of the flight surgeons at Brooks Field, in San Antonio, stating that there were some loathsome social diseases available in Texas that could be cured with nothing less than amputation. OhBoy! Think that doesn't slow down your Saturday nights in town?

Some of the older guys said that that was an exageration, but I was pretty young then. Better safe than sorry.

I remember going in to town in San Antonio one night with one of the guys that worked for me. I was a M/Sgt. in those days. He was an older, great big, guy about 6' 3" or 6' 4" and had almost thirty years in the Army. He was only a buck sargeant , but had been as high as T/Sgt. a few times. He had always re-enlisted for a different branch, apparently to try them all out. He was going to finish out in the Army Air Forces. This was just before we became the USAF.
We were walking between beer joints (Honky Tonks in Texan) down near the river walk and one of the "Working girls" offered him an invitation. He allowed that he wasn't presently in the mood, so to speak, and she said something like "Aw come on, Big Boy. I've got something you've never had", or words to that effect. He looked her straight in the eye and said, "What in hell do you have, Honey? Leprosy?".

Resurrecting an old thread...

I recently picked up a January 1948 copy of Mechanix Illustrated at a used book store. I was hoping there might be a 170 ad in there but there wasn't. I did find some cool articles about the "new" method of fighting forest fires using water bombs and there is a nice page advertising the Stinson Voyager. And helicopters will be lifting heavy loads!!
