I was at Del-Air earlier this week and mentioned that that I was planning on doing some weld repairs to the stationary panel (p/n 0513110 fig.38-1). They advised against this as they were of the opinion that this was 2024-T3 aluminum. This part is a structural member of the fuselage. The reason I assumed that this was weldable aluminium was because I saw the photos of Guido and Karen Perla's "Bird of Prey" http://www.birdofprey.us/pages/2/index.htm which show some weld repairs to the panel similar to what I am planning on doing.
The Cessna manual says, in section 19-9B, that "in general, skins used on Cessna aircraft covered in this manual are made from 2024 aluminium alloy, heat treated to a -T3, -T4 or -T42 condition. ... A few components (some empenage tips, for example) have been fabricated from an easily formed and/or readily weldable material such as 5052-O and 6061-O. These can be recoginzed by their relative softness."
Anyone know for certain what material this panel is made of?
