What year 172's for parts?

Post by N419A »

It looks like the 56' to 59' 172's would provide a lot of used parts for a 170. What year did they change the fuselage, like the step firewall. Looking at classifieds looks like the cowls stayed the same for a few years, unless folks are useing older cowls like the 53's. I tryed looking up in old threads, but only find folks refering to getting 172 parts from salvage yards for different aplications.
So, if some one know of hand roughly what years and what parts are the same between the 170 and 172, I'd appreaciate it.
Thanks, Paul

In 1960 they swept the tail, in 61 they changed the fuselage and shortened the landiing gear , in 63 they changed the fuselage again and added the rear window

172 parts

Post by squaretail »

I have a 56 172 that I am converting to a tail wheel. I used all the parts from the 170B parts book for the main gear along with pponk stuff for the conversion. All fast back 172/175 planes have parts that may work on later 170 planes. The 180 shares most gear box parts also. On Some part numbers you have to go to 185 model parts book to order with a good part number.
