Replacement Steps

Post by blueldr »

Does anyone have the name and number of the guy or company that makes the replacement steps fo these airplanes? When I tore the landing gear off of my airplane the $%#@^&$ flimsy step collapsed and I need a new one.

XP Mods
(aka "Tailwheel Tommy").

They're not cheap (saw/talked to Tom at Arlington
and as I recall, they were around $400 + a $50 core
charge). New Cessna ones are even more $$$$....

Makes me want to fab up a jig and start welding.

I've been working on a '53 180 that landed hard
in a field (ran out of gas) and it also got both
steps knocked off. I guess I'd prefer the steps
to break off rather than having them bugger up
the belly skins.

Try Williams Aircraft Co. advertized in "the 170 news" Their price is $250
phone# 325-944-8558. still expensive but better than $400.

I just had mine break while I was in Idaho last week. I'd noticed that the weld was cracked but didn't get around to welding it quick enough. I think you can buy the same size 4130 aerodynamic tubing through Spruce and Specialty and it would be pretty easy to fab one up. Other than the six # 4,5? rivets there is only one bolt inside the outboard seat rail and the nut for it can be easily accessed through an inspection plate in the floor board.

Hey Joe,
How is that spinner holding up I sold you at Moose Creek a couple years ago? I was at Moose Creek last week but obviously missed you.

I'm glad you guys brought this up. I have had a small crack in the passenger side step since I bought the plane 9 years ago. Sounds like I better get it taken care of.

Spinner is doing great Len! Sorry I missed you, I camped at Magee this year and flew down to Moose Creek on the 3rd for a day of fishing. When I stepped out of the plane there is when it broke.

F. Atlee Dodge in Anchorage also makes replacement steps. Last one I bought from him was $150, but that was a few years ago. About 1/2 that to repair a salvageable one. (907) 344-1755.
