Texas Fly-In Sat, Aug 12, KLBX Lake Jackson

Post by GAHorn »

Greeting to all Cessna 170 Association members and guests,

Angleton may not be close enough to the coast to be any cooler than the rest of Texas, but let's give it a try Saturday, the 12th of August.

Let's all have a nice flight to Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport https://www.airnav.com/airport/KLBX , and we will eat at The Runway Cafe https://runwaycafetx.com/ .

It will be a good opportunity to review our convention at Sault Ste. Marie and also the 75th Anniversary of the Cessna 170 at Oshkosh, and share the experience with those who were not able to attend.

As usual, let's please try to arrive prior to 11:00 a.m.

If you have questions or suggestions please contact Ken Peck

In addt’l news about KLBX.. The original airport* in the area was a few miles south and used to be owned by Dow Chemical and was 5,000’ long in 1972 when a Hijacked National Air Lines B-727 landed there.

During the negotiations, a News crew was involved in a scuffle with law enforcement. Video: https://davewardshouston.com/videos/hij ... he%20press.

One of the reporters was a well-known local reporter Jessica Savitch who went on to become a nationally known television journalist. (She met an unfortunate early-end in an automobile accident around 1983.)

Here’s another story of the hijacking:

I was living in nearby Houston at the time and working as a CFI at KHOU and recall how they got the 727 back out of the small airport by stripping it down and minimum fuel.

Texas members and guests flew to Angleton, KLBX Saturday the 12th of August for lunch at The Runway Cafe.

There were 8 attendees arriving in two 170s, one Bonanza and one auto.

President Karl Towle briefed us on the convention at Sault Ste. Marie and the 75th Anniversary of the Cessna 170 at Oshkosh.

Sheila Wyborny brought us up to date on the Christmas party to be held in Bryan, TX December 8 - 10, 2023. She advised everyone to make hotel reservations ASAP if there is any possibility you can attend. If unable to attend you can always cancel your reservation.

Those who were able to attend and enjoy the nice visitation with fellow members and guests were: Wendell & Sheila Wyborny, Jamie Crandall Brent & Amber Seiler, Karl Towle, Megan Lindholm and Ken Peck
