I have the original pull-type starter on my C-145 in my 1951 C-170A.
I am considering having my engine overhauled and might as well switch to a new technology starter. Since there are a couple options, I am wondering what all the latest opinions and experience with changing out the starter might be?

Overhaul is a good time to change to a lightweight starter, as the pinion shaft for the pull starter needs to be cut off its base, and that is best done off the engine. When I did mine in 2006 I went with the more expensive B&C because at the time the SkyTec was having some reliability problems. No issues whatsoever in nearly 600 hours.

Same here, also 600 hours.

Skytec here..Nothing bad to say. Has worked flawlessly.

Sixty-Eight Years of Reliable Service from the original Delco-Remy still works for me. I replaced the $4 brushes at 500 hrs. Spent the money saved on the next two annuals.
