Brake Line Retainer

I have a 170A, S/N 20216. It is a 1951. I am looking for the brake line retainer clips that hold the hard brake line to the gear leg. I think the part number is now 07410000-7 OLA. Though my plane is a 1951 A model, the retainer listed in the 170A parts manual is incorrect. My plane was one of the last A models made before the switch to the B model. The clips I have on my plane are listed in the 1952 170B parts manual. The best price I have found so far for new is $305 each. There has to be a better way. Any ideas anyone?

Steve, I can't help with the part but FYI there are 3 gear from the factory on the 170. The earliest gear is the same as the Cessna 140 and has a hole through the gear for the clips rivet. The later style of the same gear started about at serial 19219, only has a dimple as yours should be and these are the same through 53 when the last gear commonly call the "lady leg" gear came into use. The A model IPC illustration only shows the early clip with rivet but in the parts listing it lists 2 parts depending on serial number.

Your looking for part 0541136. This is likely the same part number you would find in the B model IPC cause the same clip is used till serial 25612.

The 0741000-7 part IS NOT what your looking for. This is the clip for the "lady legs" on aircraft after 25612.

Actually as these gear have been switched all around over the years in many 170s you need to be sure what gear you actually have.

The bad news is with a quick search I am not able to find any 0541136 at any price.

Many a 170 owner (or their mech) have used a clamp such as a modified Adel clamp that goes completely around the gear and the brake line. And I've even seen plan old zip ties used though that would not be my choice.

I don't remember where I saw it but I think I've seen this used on somebody's 170. Might be worth looking into.

I saw a 170 out of Boise last summer that used that fairing and a flexible hose from the fuselage all the way to the calliper. Looked sharp.

One too many zeros Stephen. The late model C-170B's with the lady legs use p/n 0741000-7. Texas Air Salvage lists one for sale for $95 which seems ridiculous for a used part.

Not sure where you found that s/n Bruce. My IPC shows p/n 0541136 used through s/n 25372. In any case it would be interesting to see these two clips, p/n 0541136 and p/n 0741000-7, side by side. One of them--my guess is p/n 0541136-- probably matches the L-19 clip, p/n 0641101-1. It's available here for $35 with free shipping. I'm sure Air Repair also has them in stock. Before ordering it I would make sure the distance from the dimple to the rear face of the L-19 gear matches the same distance on your gear. If the L-19 part doesn't match it looks quite simple to fabricate. I'd be glad to give you measurements if you're interested in making your own.

Sure looks like a good application for an Owner Produced Part!

Steve, it sounds as if you might have the later "lady legs" clip, which is listed in the B IPC as 0541000-7.
Air Repair uses the same clip under a different PN for an L19. That is PN 0641101-1 and Air Repair used to sell it for $35. 662-846-0228
I've sent Danny an email and hope to hear from him on this. I'll let you know.

PS: In 2005 the Cessna price was only $60.88. It's now over $510.

Thank you all for the advice on my Brake Line Retainer Clip. I have asked the seller of the L-19 part for the dimensions and am continuing research into this.

Don't know the name now, but there was an aircraft company located in Thomas, OK that had brake line clips. I ordered a couple along with other items from them. The clips wouldn't work on my gear so they were returned for credit. You might do some investigating to see if such a company is still there and if so, do they have what you need.

Gary 25612 is the first serial with "Lady Legs". I assumed the later A model clip would be used till the switch. However I see the IPC says the part 0541136 changed at serial 25372.

Something is fishy here.

Bruce,
Yeah, that is weird. I have an old early style leg as well as the later lady legs. I compared the distance between the dimples and the trailing edge of the two different gear legs. They are within 0.10" of each other.

Good enought for gov't work, right? (L-19/O-1 Birddogs)

I'd bet a center-punch could place that dimple on the clip wherever one wanted.

The L19 clip is available at $22.40 each according to Air Repair. Hope that helps.

Just a warning , if you fit the rubber fairing on the rear of the landing gear leg , jacking the aircraft with the steel bracket
Will damage the rubber fairing. The rubber fairing does make a great brake line retainer instead of the clips .

Steve, did you ever get dimensions on these L-19 parts? The 170B my buddy and I just acquired has duct tape in place of that clip and we'd like to do better  . The photo of that part looks just like what's on my B-model, but it difficult to tell dimensions in the photo.
