Recently there was a discussion regarding Aeroshell vs Phillips oils. I believe that it was stated that one could change between brands, as long as the same specification product was being used, without any danger of causing a problem with a mid time engine. I have been using Aeroshell W100 and W100+ and am thinking of possibly switching to Phillips due to local availability (our Shell distributor has gone out of business). I called the Phillips distributor and the lady said they only carry the Phillips multi viscosity oil? Is the Phillips 66 Type A 100AD the same as Aeroshell W100 (or W100+) ie: 50 wt? I'm curious why a Phillips distributor would only carry the mv oils.

It's the same specs as the AeroShell W100. They likely haven't had large requests for it?

It's the same as AeroShell W100 but meets the later 301G req. of Lycoming (Aeroshell meets the earlier 301-F). (This is probably only because of a test-date and not likely a significant difference.)

Aeroshell W100+ includes the Lycoming Additive for Lyc Service Bulletins 446C, 471, and Svc Inst. 1409A. The Aeroshell W100 and Phillips 100AD does not contain that additive (which is not to be used in certain applications like helicopter engine combo-transmissions, clutch-drives, or engine break-in, etc.)

An update--aviation oil outlet is still the best deal, even less than directly from Phillips. While I haven't had to add oil to my 170, except for changes, my "new" 195 does self lubricate, and a "normal" tank load is 3.5 gallons. Thanks, fellow owners, for the information!
