We can all speculate but I also hear Joe Friday " Just the facts man (ma'am)" from the engine tear down report.
Maybe a pic of the face of the offending lifter, our equivalent of DNA evidence, is what I (maybe we) want.

Hi, just to clarify.... the number 1 cylinder had the valve issue. I told the mechanic to also replace number 6 because it also had the same time on it as 1. When he removed 6 he looked through and saw the lifter damaged. The lifter had nothing to do with the exhaust valve on number 1. The two issues have nothing to do with each other.

Unless you know the answer, trust your mechanic

All is well. Aero Engines of Winchester VA did a great job...have about 15 hours and its running great. Thanks for asking, btw I don't know if you remember but you sold me an overlay, and it looks great. Thanks again.

Aero engines repaired a bad cam for me a few years ago and I was very satisfied with their work and price as well. The engine has never leaked less oil in the last 23 years. Bill K

Just thought I'd mention this for two reasons; one, it seems there's a few out there pondering whether to buying a 170 with a high time engine and they may want to factor in the likely internal condition of their new machine.
Two, I recently disassembled another 0-300, running well but using oil. That engine had # 6 cylinder lobe issues likely due to the angle of the dangle of the engine in a 170.
http://www.tcmlink.com/pdf2/SID05-1B.pdf from Continental likely posted already but points out a good reason to change your oil frequently. I'll follow-up with pic's of the engine.
