I have seen welding rod or retainers from the tractor parts store commonly referred to as hair pins. The beauty of hairpins is the ability to safety wire them so they can't come out. Bill K

The correct pin called out in the '48 and A model IPC but the same in all models is NAS41-2-1.625 or a NAS41-2 pin 1-5/8". In the B model IPC the Cessna part is 0711001-59. No matter the model, all the pins are the same and if you follow Yingling's listing for 0711001-59 you will see that the NAS41-2 pin is equivalent to a AN253-2 or MS20253P2 pin. On the AN or MS number after the dash there are 4 digits. Someone can correct me but it seems the first digit is inches and the last 3 are additional length in thousands so a pin -7200 would be 7.2" or just under 7-1/4".

If you follow the Yingling listing to PIN HINGE MS20253P2-7200 you will see it is $9.18 and if I'm correct on it's length you would need one to make 4 door pins if you cut very accurately.

So your going to Ace Aeromotive to look at the hitch pins? I've found a listing of the diameter of the MS20253P2 as .089-.09" in diameter. Take your micrometer with you.

Looking for those AN415-2 lock pins, "just like the J3 has" at Aircraft Spruce? Their diameter is .080 so they are to thin but, yes I've seen them used or was it a Ace Aeromotive substitute masquerading as an AN415-2? If you can find an AN415-3, the diameter is .091 which might be perfect for your wallowed out hinges.

Most likely will research Ace Aeromotive and Tractor Aeromotive for options, mine are NOT original pins and my hinges are NOT wallowed out either, but the "removable" pins are some home made crap that I have disliked since I bought the airplane, plus I like the idea of removable pins to remove the doors easily for cabin mx.....I'll updated as to my solution....

MS20253-P2-7200 stainless steel hinge pin, cut and bent approximately as shown, seems to work pretty well for me. They are easily removable, yet very secure.

These are what Mountain Airframe installed on my doors. I'm not sure what they are, but they are very tight in the hole.

Miles, those pins remind me of the "safety pins" used on hand held fire extinguishers.....but at least what you have is another option to consider, Thanks Burro

Miles, the advantage those have over the typical clips is they don't mar the paint so badly on the hinge. (A tight fit also prevents the door from sagging and improperly engaging the door stops and latches. The looser R-clips suffer from both those ailments.)

I've found that, dependant upon the hinge condition.... some hinge pins allow the door to "sag" to the point that door latches do not properly engage.... or doors may mar the doorpost upon closing.

Soft hinge pins (brass) are especially susceptible to wear. The aviation supply section at TSC carries a nice assortment of different diameter hinge pins that sometimes may be used to re-hang doors so they engage the doorpost correctly.

Many ,many years ago when I was learning to fly one of those new fangle cessna 172 ,s the instructor and my self were flying over some mud flats in the circuit area when he leaned over and opened the door next to me. As he said at top of his voice ' this is what happens when a door opens in flight. " before I could grab the door arm rest to close it there was a crack and the door was horizontal with the fuselage and twisting on one hinge and then it let go .it then hit the rear horizontal stabiliser with a bang and it was then floating down like a huge leaf. I grabbed that seat belt real tight and my heart rate went ballistic. Some one had made the hinges out of brass or copper wire thinking it was best the hinge pin wore out instead of the hinge material.

For the 170 you want the 3/32" dia. pin, p/n AD0711001-59. Their 1/8" dia. pin, p/n AD0711038-1, corresponds to the C-180 hinge pin p/n.
