I have the opportunity to pick up a Hanlon Wilson exhaust system off of a '55 170B. Anyone know offhand if it's a direct bolt on for my '49 170A?

No not exactly. The right muffler is not the correct one if you are planning to use the proper '52 and earlier heat shrouds.

All the other pieces are correct.

Are you getting the complete system including the heat shrouds?

If so then it will all work however the scat tube for the heat is 3" not the 2" your plane has so you either have to adapt down the inlet and outlet or change your aircrafts heater manifold on the fire wall and the intake in the front engine baffle.

Also the approval is for the '52 system and so a '53 and later system would be a mod to that you would have so smooth over with your IA.

You could just by a 2" flange and 3" flange from Spruce and rivet them together to make an adaptor to step the hose down..
That will save you from modifying the plane or exhaust.
