Camping and Landing Off the Beaten Path

Post by spduffee »

I am new to taildragging, haven't had my ticket for very long and have landed on one grass strip to practice short/soft field operations. Once my 170 is up and running I plan on doing all the things I should do with it - landing wherever my skills allow, camping, hunting...whatever. I have a general overview of the FAA regs, but what I would like to know is, how do you know you can legally land somewhere, camp out, etc? How do you know you aren't trespassing, or that some weirdo playing a banjo with bad teeth looking at you like you're a squeeling pig isn't going to come up and gig you? Short version: How does one do backcountry flying?

You can legally land at open airports.
The rest is per Local and State law..kinda like driving on the beach or four wheeling in the woods.

Past that, you better make sure with the land owner and local authorities before turning onto final.

Thanks Arash, I'll check that out.
I had heard about this knucklehead and how he survived the landing but f'd up trying to get out, but had never taken the time to look at the video. Too much...
There are two fields near me, one at the midpoint elevation of Mt Rainier and one next to the I-90 that I'm keen on tackling, but I'll have to master my 170 takeoffs first to avoid trees and all those nasty powerlines snaking through the mountains.

After reading several postings on the Backcountry site I decided to get some beefier tires. I found a good deal online and they're on their way to my house now. I'm pretty excited....

It looks like you will be able to roll in instead of flying  . The big problem would be to get stopped after starting :o .

I guess I'll have to move up to double-pucks. I'm trying to decide now whether or not to add wheelpants....Thoughts?

Hey! Yes, just like the salesman showed me. Now, if I can combine those with my crosswind landing gear I've been telling you all about....
