You are very correct, on the ground. When in the air with a much flatter pitch, visibility is decent but being able to see above, especially when turning, is good. But back on topic, do what you want

There is no STC that I know of for this mod for the 170,A,B. Sorry. You can look on the FAA website again but I never saw it. D

I really like the having the skylights in a 120/140. They are nice to look out during sharp turns. Or when flying a right pattern and turning base it is easy to look out the right skylight at the end of the runway. I would like them in my 170 if I could do it cheap. I think an easily removable sun screen would be a good idea for long cross countries or whenever the sun is making it too hot. I remember seeing pictures of a guy that put skylites in his 170 up in alaska. I thought it was on this site but maybe not? I'll try to find it again.

Here is some more discussion about skylights in 170s http://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/v ... f=7&t=3454

I talked with Robert Trasker (sp?) a few years ago about his nice 170 (with skylights) at Lake Hood. Nice guy and shared his considerable mechanical experience. I did not ask about an STC tho.
You might locate him or skylight info through Seaplanes North, 248-6161.
He could be a member here too.

George, When you changed the skin, did you have to jig the airplane?
The reason im asking is because I could have the skin, off, measured, put into the cnc machine, cut, and fit with the skylight holes perfectly placed in less than 20 hours.

no...(but it was done for me.) you can accomplish the same thing in situ, tho. just measure and
drill pilot-holes, then cut out and clean up the edges,...a lot simpler unless you plan to replace the
entire skin anyways.
