Wing Spar Repair

Post by garyl »

I am having a very old (pre 1970) repair (suspect a ground loop at one time or other) redone out between the 2nd and 3rd last rib on the spar on my left wing. The structural fellow carrying out the repair is looking for the appropriate service manual to quote the "repair spec" out of. All I have is the pre 1962 100 series service manual which shows the repair I need in figure 19-6. Just wondering if this is the correct manual even though it doesn't specifically list the 170 in its list of 100 series airplanes. Or alternately does anyone have a different repair procedure then specified in that manual. Any help would be much appreciated. email to g.latimer@ns.sympatico.ca thanks

Gary,

The pre-1962 manual is as close as you're going to get to a manual for the 170. The early 172 wings are identical to the 170, so you should be OK. If you need something you can't find in the pre-1962 manual, use "standard practices" (in the US it would be the lastest version of Handbook 43.13).

Spar Splice/Repair

Post by Indopilot »

Is that the Front or rear spar? If it is the rear, Service Kit SK70A50-1& 2 Dated Nov2 1955 Revised Aug 24 1961 addresses that repair and lists the 170 S/N 18003-27169 as being applicable. I have a copy if you need one. Brian

wing spar repair

Post by garyl »

thanks for the info Miles. Confirms what we suspected but had to check it out. Brian it is on the front spar but thanks for the offer. Good to belong to an assoc. as this where all that help and assistance is out there. A few months ago I had actually considered selling my 170B but have since come to my senses and keeping her.

We are currently doing a small repair (2.5 inches on upper) to right front spar in fuel tank area on a 56 170B and are following the Pre '62 Manual. The doublers and angles called for 8O in this location assures this spar will never fail, at least not in this location. This is a big job requiring removal of the tank and the leading edge skin from fuselage to strut. Old aircraft are just so much fun :P .
