There is no similarity between the two firewalls. The R172 has a step firewall and the 170 is flat In addition, there is , I believe, a difference in the four point mounting pattern.
Putting that engine in a C-170 makes one hell of an airplane, but the only route to go is to get the STC from XP Mods.

There's at least one "one-off" home-brewed IO-360 conversion
that was done on a 337 (like a multi year long project / 337!).
The article was in (I think) one of the TIC170A magazines.
As I recall, the engine & prop came off of some kind of twin.

If that's the article I'm thinking of I think it was an IO320 with some sort of ram air induction wasn't it?

I've run across a number of conversions to the Cont. IO-360 on C-170s that were done on a one time basis on a 337. Apparently "them days is gone forever". Probably because there is now available a STC from XP Mods covering that project. The last fellow I know of that got his done on a "one time" spent over two years and a pile of money on a DER before he finally got to use his airplane. He told me he was sorry that he hadn't gone the STC route and had the use of his airplane two years sooner.

I hear you blueldr, you're right.... There's one good guy left
at our FSDO (and some decent DERs in the area too) but when
they retire, we're in for a world of hurtin'....

On the fuel injected O-320 conversion, I remember that article
but that's not the one I was thinking of.... The article I'm thinking
of specifically mentioned getting the FWF off of some kind of twin
that uses the IO-360 and then this guy built his own mount, etc.
(did the whole conversion himself).

I agree with blueldr, it'd be cheaper (and quicker) to bite the
bullet and pay the $$$$$ for the XPMods STC.

I believe Bill Ahlstrom (TIC170A member) has a Ragwing 170 with the Continental IO-360 from a Cessna 337. The prop/spinner combination was from an early Bonanza, I think. If my recollection is good, it was another one of those "one time" field approvals and was completed quite a few years ago. It is a beautiful airplane based in the SLC area. I'm sure Bill would be happy to talk about it (look him up in the directory) but I've never seen him post in the forums. He did win an award for it at the Las Vegas TIC170A convention.

Bill Ahlstrom's ragwing (N4277V) is the same one written up in The 170 Book & The SRAM Book, it was owned by a Bill Lusk then. Doesn't say what the IO-360 came out of, but the article mentions using an engine mount from a Cessna T-41. The writer indicates that this conversion was done in 1979.
