My old friend Desmond Norman had a saying: It's better to hit the far end going slow than the near end going fast.

I had an engine fail in my ragwing once and the thing that really saved my behind was the slip. I stayed high until the last minite and the sliped into a 1400 ft grass strip. I came a lot closer to over shooting than I did to under shooting. The private pilot who was with me commented that he had never sliped like that before and I replied that under the circmstances I did not think a go around was a good plan. It is amazing how much altitude you can loose in a slip with full rudder and and a 45 degree or greater bank angle on the wings. Dont try it in a B model 170 with flaps down. Bill K.
