Any recommendations or expertise about replacing carpet with coin mat?

Don’t get me wrong... it’s your airplane... is it an approved material (fire resistant)?

How will you attach it? Glueing it down can create maintenance issues later-on.

I think George you nailed it. Albeit “Coin” a very durable material and good looking, it will likely trap moisture against 2024 T which is never a good idea.

No personal experience with either, but I’ve seen Loncoin and Aerofloor DOT recommended. From what I’ve read, one is super lightweight, the other is less so. Both are approved fire-resistant.

We used to use it in commercial use in and around galleys but I haven’t see it used for awhile. You knew when the barrier had been compromised by the smell in these areas :D Cleaning products would also effect the material causing it to swell such that a tripping hazards presented themselves. Likely none of these issues would present themselves in small aircraft but with the material being somewhat hard, debris getting underneath it (sand) and any relative movement would take its tolll on the floor.

The recommendations in the link below for installation recommend Velcro for fastening. I was ready to order one of their kits a year ago but didn’t like the color of the samples I was sent. If I could get the grey that shows on my devices I would have bought it. The samples I got labeled grey were about the color of a weathered tire.

Having a foam backing sounds like a very good solution.

Looking at loncoin it is faa approved and has a burn cert, noticed in other aircraft (pictures), was wondering if you cut to fit do you need to attach it or can it just lay like a fitted mat. Need to be able to pull it out for access to insp holes, etc

Wouldn’t foam be even more susceptible to moisture retention?

Worst of two evils I guess George. Abrasion will work through protective coatings, moisture never a good thing. I have an Airtex carpet which I think uses a fine closed cell foam backing. Whenever I remove the carpet there’s a fair amount of fine black dust which needs to be vacuumed up. So there’s definitely carpet movement and wear of the foam but as my plane is hangared it seldom sees rain or gets wet. Also removing the carpet is very easy and quick, so I’m happy with it.

I had it in a C185 floatplane. What I had looked like the stuff they used in Boeing galleys. I don’t know what brand it was but it was stiff enough it was just laid on the floor and did not creep. It was fitted to be easy to remove to clean under or let dry out.

Thanks for the report. My carpet is reaching the end, so I'm thinking about what to replace it with.

I got a few rolls of 1/4" thick closed cell fatigue mat material from our local Menards/Home Depo store. 6'x4' piece weighs only 1 lb. I cut it to fit and it simply lays there with no adhesion stuff required. I lift it up or take out to vacuum and inspections. It has the best impact absorbing characteristic I have ever seen...I was able to allow myself to fall to my knees from a standing position on it w/o any discomfort!!

John, did you try to light a piece of it on fire? Would be interested to know if or how well it burns.
