Bendix Magnetos

Post by 170C »

For almost 29 yrs I’ve had Bendix mags on 6888A and at engine oh as well as each time the mags get 500 our more hrs I send them to be “overhauled “. A friend has similar mags and was told the mags only née to be “inspected “ at 500 hrs. He was told Continental says oh at 13 yrs?? Seeking clarification on this. I know each time mine have been in the shop there have bee some items replaced, but not ever component so maybe those were IRAN’s?

Normally we change the points and condenser and check everything as per the bendix manual at 500 hrs .We overhaul them at engine overhaul. But be warned there is a number of AD,s that have to attended to .

Unlike IRAN, overhaul requires that some parts be replaced regardless of condition. But I think the biggest difference between them is that at OH the magnet gets re-magnetized, which takes a special tool most shops don’t have.

Apparently certain CORES are becoming scarce.

A number of years ago I purchased a Bendix mag for 90C. SN 26422 late 1954.

Surprised at how "picky" A/S was when I elected to keep my old core and
pay the core charge. Delayed shipping , etc.

It became an ordeal.
