If you are the least bit concerned about privacy then you won't like ADSB. After I had mine installed last year the FAA sent me an email with the following picture to tell me that mine was showing airborne sometimes when it was on the ground. It needed a software update even though it was only a month old. My local avionics guy did the update at no charge so that was nice. (I now wonder how often these things will need a software update. This could be a recurring expense until the manufacturer, in this case Garmin, deems it obsolete and I have to buy a new unit.)

What I found a little surprising was the detail at which the FAA can see one's flight path. It appears to send a "ping" about every second. Green is airborne and red is on the ground. It shows where I touched down, bounced a little, swerved a little, and then taxied to my hangar. The FAA's email even said, "we see where you taxied to your hangar". There's no hiding.

Anyway, ... here's a pic showing what big brother can see when you go fly.... (not a pretty landing but in my defense it was a windy day... :D )

Looks like a pretty good landing to me since you were able to taxi in to the hangar. :D

BTW, I would have enjoyed watching that 727 land there.

I sincerely dislike Big Brother watching me (and controlling me) and will delay installing ABS-B as long as possible. My problem is that I am old enough to remember once living in a. mostly FREE country. The younger folks don't seem to know the difference, or care.

Now that all of you know where my hangar is located, come visit!

I'm still amazed that this thing displayed my bounced landing. I don't know how it can measure altitude that accurately. It couldn't have been more than a foot or two off the ground.

I'm not too concerned about personal privacy regarding my neighbors tracking my movements... heck I would tell them where I'm going if they wanted to know. But I am pretty sure this will be used for revenue collection at some point ... either through fees or fines. Maybe I'm wrong. We'll see.

Money grubbing politicians are not ever going to stop increasing taxes, fees, and penalties. And I don't like anyone stalking me including the government or 35 year old snowflakes in pajamas in their parent's basement any more than anyone else. But that is the way technology is going and not much that anyone can do about it unless you choose to live in the last century. Heck, if you don't want anyone to know where you are, you better remove your home security cameras and take the battery out of your cell phone because Google knows where you are ALL the time.

Personally, I'm not doing anything wrong I need to hide and I like the ADS-B info I get while I'm flying. I'm sure not going to give up the cell phone either. :)

I agree on the ADS-B in info... this airport in Murfreesboro has a busy flight school. Being able to find the position of the six students in the pattern is a big plus. They don't always report their position accurately. I haven't spent much time using the weather information but it looks like it will be useful too.

I can do a LOT of flying outside Class B/C airspace but not all of it, so I'm stuck with ADS-B. When I fly to the DFW area, the airport I go to just recently got the flight school the neighboring airport ran off because they had too much traffic. I'm glad to have the flight school at our airport and also ADS-B because their practice area is now very close to the RNAV/GPS approach path. I shoot a practice approach every time I land there and it is very comforting to know where the swarm of bees is. Luckily all the flight school planes have ADS-B as well.

I think all of us who learned to fly before all the gee-whiz stuff came along look out the window a lot. I know I do for the very reasons Arash mentioned but also because I like to look around while I'm flying. That's one of the reasons I learned in the first place. And now with ADS-B I know a LONG time before I can possibly see them that someone is coming my way. We don't see MOST of the traffic around us but luckily there is a lot of air up there.

Arash-
No, we have never met although I did go to your hangar one day hoping to catch you in Half Moon Bay. You had just left according to your hangar neighbor. It's tough getting inside the fence but I managed being the airport bum that I am. I look forward to meeting you some day. California is a paradise in my opinion and I would live there except for the out of control laws, regulations, and taxes.

In Alaska pilots are ASKED to avoid flying low over wildlife areas but there is no violation if you do. I guess it might be different in the land of fruits and nuts. That altitude data is available on FlightAware right now on every ADS-B equipped flight. All they need is an N-Number.

That's a deal Arash, looking forward to it. I visit a pilot friend in Aptos, south of Santa Cruz every year or so to get my California fix and we usually drive up to Pescadero and eat at Duarte's Tavern so it would be an easy drive on up to HMB.

The 1800 dollars was introduced instead of landing fees. This only applied to hangar owners , but anybody could land here for free. Not fair I say . Now with ADSB , they want to intro landing fees. These are one of the highest on the Eastern Australian coast. The revolt is coming . The peasants are gathering their pitch folks .
Peasants in Australia have airplanes.??!!?? I'm packing up!

It's still incumbent on the pilot to "see and avoid"...even if flying IFR.

Wow, thanks Arash, very generous offer. I’ll let you know the next time I’m in CA.
