98C Homecoming Party

Postby cessna170bdriver » Fri Apr 28, 2017 4:25 am

Now than 98C has safely arrived in Michigan, Karen and I have decided to host 98C's homecoming on Saturday, May 20 to coincide with our local EAA Chapter 384 Open House. I don't have any details from the EAA chapter yet other than they are planning lunch at the clubhouse from around 11-2ish. We're planning to gather at my house after that and have catered BBQ around 5:00.

If you plan on flying in, bring tie downs. If the 24' wide runway here at 45G bothers you, we have 35' of grass immediately to the northwest, between the pavement and lights, with smooth grass-pavement transition. 100LL ($4.19) and unleaded alcohol-free mogas ($3.25ish) is available on a cash basis.

Dang it all, we've got our goddaughter's confirmation that weekend.

As much as we'd love to be there I don't think I could make it back to MN in time on Sunday. Sorry we'll miss this momentous event!!

For the last week the forecast for Saturday bounced back and forth between rain and partly cloudy. As it turned out we got both. Until early afternoon it was a bit windy but flyable, but by party time it had turned cool and rainy. New 170 Association member Daniel Findling stopped by early in his C-140A, but couldn't stay. Association members Glenn and Mary Ann Dee from Laporte Indiana and Bruce and Carolyn Sdunek from Howell Michigan had planned to fly in but the rain put them on the road. 40-45 other friends and neighbors drove and walked in for the catered pork and chicken BBQ and beans, and the homemade potato salad and cole slaw expertly prepared by Karen and her mother Kathryn over the previous 3 days.

Since Ryan didn't show up with the beer from the paint color raffle  we cut it a bit close in that department, blowing the keg about 9:00. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as we were able to break down the tables and chairs and get 98C back inside before the weather got really nasty.

Many thanks to new Association member Jason Burton for hauling tables and chairs and helping to set up, and thanks to his wife Michelle for preparing and bringing the 7-layer dip to keep the crowd happy before the BBQ was delivered. Thanks to Karen's sister Jeanine for making brownies to satisfy the sweet tooth that all fans of Cessna 170s seem to harbor. And thanks to all who attended and welcomed 98C to the end of her "Road to Recovery"!
