Come on up and land at 4AK6 Wolf Lake and you have a place for you and your plane. We also make the best barbequed King salmon in Alaska...fact not opinion:) I had to say that my wife is watching me type

Sheep Mountain Lodge

Post by pdb »

The Lodge closes this year on Sept 11 but its still a great place to go and they have great food and clean rooms. Its not just cheeseburgers.

The airstrip (PASP) is 2,200' and in good condition though its on the side of the mountain. Field elevation is 2,270msl. Its level but landing to the NE, you are flying into rising terrain. Likewise, when landing to the SW, you are going to feel the illusion of being low.

Now I realize I'm adding to this topic a bit late, but I've noticed no one has mentioned Chena Hot Springs (AK13). It's a 3000' rolling dirt strip with a southern approach through the hills that doesn't allow you a visual of the runway until a tight base-to-final turn which puts you right over the threshold. Unless you fly there regularly enough to have your altitude nailed at this point (or a real slow- flying bird), you slip in steep and quick and try to keep from skidding in the loose dust as you come to a stop. Back taxiing to the parking area puts you in the heart of a resort with a lovely outdoor rock pool spring (picturesque in the winter), and a rustically cozy tavern with good beer, good food (especially the burgers), and oftentimes live music. If you're going to test my taste in beer, there are plenty of rooms and cabins for over-night indulgence.
I've visited the springs a number of times in the past, but this summer marks the first time I've gone by air. Fly in with the wife and children, soak, swim, eat then fly home- man that's a day trip that's hard to beat.

Thanks on the report from Chena Hot Springs. I have not flown in there since the mid-1980s and didn't know the condition of the strip so I didn't mention it before. Chena is a great place. If you are flying a 172 in and out ok, it should be a piece of cake for any 170.

Circle Hot Springs was another great Alaska fly in place for lunch or several days stay. It was an early pioneer-days lodge built over a hot springs which provided all the heat for the lodge, swimming pool, and cabins year-round. We used to have an informal several-day Valentine's Day fly-in there for many years. Swimming outside in -25°F weather was exilirating! Unfortunately, it closed down years ago and as far as I know is still closed.

All this BS about Alaskan food and not even one word on where to grt the bwst muk-tuk.

I suppose Rikas Road House is gone from Big Delta. There was more than food available there back in the old days.

That is no mistake Dick, there is no such thing as the best muktuk. I'll never eat that stuff again. I was sick all night.

Never heard of Rikas, guess its gone.

I was at Chena in 2004. They were trying to make an ice hotel, but it was mostly melted by mid-June.

When I was stationed up in Fairbanks back in about 1948, there was the story of a chichaco from the lower 48 that showed up in the watering spots in Fairbanks. He allowed as how he really wanted to become a sourdough and was willing to work diligently at becoming one. Some of the pioneer guys advised that to become a real sourdough you had to shoot a bear and cohabitate with a clootch. ( A native Alaskan female of very loose morals.) The poor bastard screwed up the instructions and wound up in the federal pen, pretty well torn up and damn near dead. Seems he inverted the instructions and shot a clootch first.

You mean to say that someone ir running Rikas Roadhouse in Big Delta today? She was pretty much of a pioneer character when I was up there in '47 to ''51.
