Restoration Progress

Post by dbarron »

Thought I would start a thread for you all to check in on the progress of my restoration. Going great so far. I will post some photos soon. Loving working on this plane. Just some irony to go along with it; My first flight was in a carseat in the back of a 170(as was my dads), my first solo flight was in a 55 model, as well as my first airplane is going to be a 170 (this was also my fathers first type of aircraft). This must mean something?! 8)
I started a blog on my progress for people to follow. Hope word gets it out there. http://cessna170restoration.blogspot.com/

Very impressive seeing the pictures as you progress.
I'm learning and saving certain upgrade tricks from you and the other fellow posting pictures.
Thanks

This is what I had to begin with. Sat at the airport for many years slowly rotting away. Rescued it just in time though!

Is that the one that sat on the ramp in Hannibal? That looks like the one I looked at. I called the owner and I think they wanted $25K for it. I hope the came down for you. Are you guys doing the wings or sending them off?

Blake,
Yes that is the one! He wanted an outrageous amount at first but we were able to get it down a bit. Helped me out a lot, that's for sure.
I am in the process of refurbishing the wings at this moment. A bit of corrosion but I am able to get it out for the most part. Trying to keep this a true restoration and not turn it into a rebuild.

Yes that is us. We are also running the airport at Hannibal. Doing glider training, flight training, and skydiving as well. Come check out the fun whenever you want. Weekends we are skydiving now that the weather has warmed up a bit!

Dillon, nice work.

I was born and raised in Quincy. Soloed a J-3 the morning of my 16th birthday at Quincy and a 152 that afternoon in Hannibal. We will be to Quincy in June in our Cub. We will stop by and say hello. Where is this project located?

Bruce
cool plane to solo! love the cubs. we run the airport at hannibal but I have my project down in the garage at my dads and my house. We set up our shop for it so that way i get more time to work on it in the evenings. I am usually at the airport on nice weekends for the skydiving ops. I dont know if you have seen but I started a blog on my progress for anyone to follow

Aluma Prep + pressure wash has worked miracles on tough corrosion. Just and FYI, especially if you are going to polish. It eats all the corrosion salts (not metal as well).
