170B in Black Panther

Post by brianm »

Last night I caught a late showing of the new Black Panther movie. At one point the bad guys were trying to escape in a nice looking blue-on-white 170B. Anybody know if it is a member's airplane? The scene was set in Africa but the plane had an N number. I didn't catch the whole number because actors kept getting in the way. Apparently a lot of the movie was filmed in Atlanta, and the scene was in a boneyard full of what looked like low-wing Piper fuselages, so maybe somebody can identify the airport from that.

I was wondering if the scene would make the cut! I haven’t seen the movie yet but that’s my airplane they used. N3407D is famous...kinda. It looks nothing like it does in the film. The airplane is actually polished/red but they wrapped it with blue and white vinyl for the movie. It was filmed in Griffin(6A2) at Atlanta Air Salvage.

Congratulations, Todd! That's outstanding notoriety for you and your aircraft! My wife works in the film industry and has been needling me about getting "Baby" on the film registry, but I've been dragging my feet. Interested in hearing your experience. My wife and son saw the movie on Monday and raved about it; I'll keep a sharp lookout for "your" scene.

BTW, I still remember your post on my "I'm a new member post" six months ago. We are based at Falcon Field and we hit Barnstormers every couple of weeks, weather permitting. Was just there for breakfast Saturday morning. Looking forward to meeting you -

Thanks Brian,
I don’t have my airplane on a registry. I was just in the right place at the right time. I guess we’ve been missing each other at peach state. I haven’t flown out there on a Saturday in several weeks. Looking forward to some good flying weather and meeting you out there.

Thanks Bruce
I finally saw the movie and it’s a bigger scene than I thought it would be. Of course I couldn’t pay attention to what was going on in the scene because I was paying attention to the airplane!

No I’m not actively looking for more opportunities to rent it out. It was a good experience and it was extremely convenient since it was at my home airport. Matter of fact, they used the hanger and ramp for food service and had quite a spread for breakfast and lunch. I wouldn’t turn down an offer to do it again but I haven’t given much thought to persuing it.
