As I ponder the idea of a "hold-open" strut.... I'm reminded of all the Mooney baggage-doors and Citation baggage doors that forgetful pilots and ignorant passengers have slammed down forgetting to stow the hold-open first... OUCH!
The damage was so bad on a Citation I once flew we were delayed two days from departing as the door was re-worked by the local shop. (Kaiser Air at OAK)
I was helping a passenger load his bags into his car and turned-around to go back to the plane to close the fwd bag door when I saw a "helpful" pax reach up and grab the door... Before my screamed "NOo...!" reached his ears he'd used two hands to tear it loose from the stanchion and snapped the hinge.
We have a bad-enough shortage of cowlings.... KISS.
However... here's what I used on my bag door instead of a chain.... may be a possible solution if the door can be made sufficiently stiff: https://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... gBEALw_wcB
