175 Wings

Re: 175 Wings
Long range tanks are the only advantage.
If you can get the approval, it's a very cost effective way to get the big tanks. Very useful for big motor swaps.
Structurally, there are no other differences in the wings.
The trick is finding a good set of 175 wings. I've had the approval for two years and still havent found a good enough set of wings for my project :/

Re: 175 Wings
Could you just get the fuel tanks out a pair of 175 wings and put then in your existing 170 wings?bagarre wrote:Long range tanks are the only advantage.

Re: 175 Wings
That's exactly what I'm wondering Karl, a little extra juice would be very handy for my area of operations but I really don't need a full on Flint or Javelin mod
Re: 175 Wings
Sure. Or out of a 172 for that matter. They are all the same parts.
You need to trim a rib, make a few brackets, extend the hat sections under the tank and make new tank covers....and get a 337 approved for the work which may or may not be an issue.
Mine would need all that plus new top skins due to some bad hail damage which is why finding good 175 wings is more cost effective for me.
Another route is to get the long range fuel tank STC from DelAir. You send them your tanks and they weld extensions onto them plus give you all the parts needed for the install. This route saves your float gauges. With the 175 wings, you need electronic fuel gauges.

... and a change in the flap cable routing, I believe.bagarre wrote:...With the 175 wings, you need electronic fuel gauges.

Re: 175 Wings
Specs, for the 175 seem to be a little vague what is the capacity of the 175 tanks ??
Re: 175 Wings
52 gallons. (Cessna 175's have a limitation of ten gallons unusable, however, likely due to unporting which occurs at high takeoff/climb attitudes. Most owners claim all the fuel is available at normal attitudes.)

Re: 175 Wings
That would make for a very nice, comfortable reserve quantity. Is there some reasonable literature floating around on the "how to" of this idea ??
Re: 175 Wings
If you're serious, you should contact Ol'Gar (Flyguy here at the forums) as he has a complete C-175 he needs to let have a new home.)Mapleflt wrote:That would make for a very nice, comfortable reserve quantity. Is there some reasonable literature floating around on the "how to" of this idea ??

Re: 175 Wings
No change in any cable, wires or fuel lines. They are identical less the fuel tank accommodations.gahorn wrote:... and a change in the flap cable routing, I believe.bagarre wrote:...With the 175 wings, you need electronic fuel gauges.
Re: 175 Wings
I like the wings I have, recent Horton kit with VG's and fresh paint. If all i have to do is open the skins over the tanks to complete the majority of the modifications that is a BIG bonus.
Re: 175 Wings
Would the tanks from an L-19 work, same wing isn't it and wing root fuel gauges as well
Re: 175 Wings
They will fit and I'd bet the modifications would be similar to fitting 175 tanks. Bird Dogs had the same wings as 170's (and 172s and 175s) but BirdDogs has different flaps.Mapleflt wrote:Would the tanks from an L-19 work, same wing isn't it and wing root fuel gauges as well
L-19's are based on a 170 but there are a LOT of differences. I wouldn't be surprised if the wings had some big differences too.
The real question is the approval which is between you and your FSDO.
