New adventures

Post by LBPilot82 »

Well it's settled... after owning my 170 for 11 years now I have decided to move on to a 180. The 170 has served me very well but a growing family has lead me to purchase a 1953 180. I wanted to say a big thanks to the members of this association. The collective knowledge and support found here is incredible. I will certainly stay active with the group and might even join fly-ins when I can (so long as square tails aren't a problem). I have listed the 170 for sale in our trade mart. Thanks again for what this group has done for me and my 170!

Nice looking 180 Richard! I'm working on a friend of mine to sell his 140 and get a 170, so I'll steer him to your ad.

Don't be a stranger! We've never turned a 170 lover away at a convention or fly in yet, regardless of what he was flying. Among others I know I've seen a Bonanza, a Cherokee, of course 195s, and even a Beaver amongst the 170s on the flight line. (I don't think you'll find the same open mindedness at 180 club events...).

Beautiful airplane, Richard.

A friend of mine owns what was N1590C when she was new. She worked as a Mexican pipeline patrolled in her younger years and was repatriated with a new N number, N75077. I've got some time in the airplane and there is certainly no comparison between a 170 and a 180. But then again, there is no comparison to a 170 from anything else, either. The gentleman that my father sold our 170 to sold it after finding a 180. Such is life. Enjoy your new bird!

Being a 53 model (first year of production), 30C basically has the identical cabin size as a 170. This makes the plane very familiar to fly. The difference of course is the power. She has an impressive power plant that gives me about 1700fpm with full fuel and myself. She'll cruise around 150ktas @ 12.2gph. Camping trips in the 170 have become a little challenging with a family of 4 but I don't see that being a problem now. :D I even get a baggage door now!!

I had many existential questions once I started flying the 180. The only solution I've come up with is to be Richard Pulley when I grow up. 170, 180, 195. Add a nice Beech 18 to that and there is nothing one can't conquer.

I'll second that!! Haha. I was thinking more like a DC3 but a beech 18 would work too.

This one is particularly unique because of the motor so I have quite a learning curve ahead of me. I have lots of time behind big bore Continentals but this is a field approved one-off and unlike anything I have flown. Should be fun!

Lets just say it's a suped up IO-520. Built by one of the better recognized performance engine shops around. With takeoff power approved at 2850 it's pretty impressive. The dyno numbers showed well north of 300hp. It started as a PPonk O-470-50 and grew from there so that's what the data tag still shows. I think the only O470 part actually remaining is the oil pan in order to fit the engine mount. The cool thing is how low the fuel burn is in cruise for the amount of power it puts out. Full power takeoff is close to 30gph but 23 squared in cruise burns just over 12gph and only 5mph shy of VNE.

We've been known to allow even Frank Stephenson to participate....
