New brake discs and linings. The old discs were worn to 0.200", which is 0.005" below minimum thickness. They were scored on the braking surface and rusty elsewhere so I decided to get rid of them. Interesting that the new discs are 0.235" thick, which only gives them about 1/32" of wear until they're scrap.

My overhauled O-300A. The crank was good but lots of other parts had to be replaced. It repesents a lot of Christmas presents for decades to come.

John,

I thought it looks like a great piece of 1940s industrial sculpture worthy of display in my living room for the holidays but my wife had other ideas.

Pete, who did the overhaul? How was the oil pan?

Richard,

Mad Mike Patterson of Wasilla did the overhaul and I had been on his waiting list for two years. He swears it will be the last O-300 he will do. It wasn't cheap but he does very high quality work. I switched to a new lightweight starter, alternator, the new pushrod seal kits, and new Continental cylinders, all of which which increased the pain.

My oil pan was a three hole pan off an C125 or an earlier C145. It was not corroded but it appeared to have been treated with some sort of epoxy but I had no record of prior repair. It was also missing the riveted diverter plate in the sump above the carb where the intake splits the flow to both sides' intake manifolds. Neither Mike nor I were comfortable trying to reuse it even if we could have repaired the diverter plate. Its a candidate for installation on an airboat but I would be happy to sell it cheaply if someone wants to try reusing it. Prior to the overhaul the engine was running very smoothly with no indication over the last 20 years that the lack of a diverter plate made any difference.

Then I rolled the dice and got a very cheap, used 5 hole sump off eBay. (Please no groans from the peanut gallery. I went in eyes wide open and bid accordingly.) It was in surprisingly good condition so I sent it out to Fred Haasdyk at Okanagan Aero in Kelowna BC who restored it to better than new and I got a 5 hole accessory case to match. My gamble here paid off. Might not be so lucky next time.

My plan was/is to keep this flying until I am as old as Blueldr.

Pete,

There aint nobody as old as blueldr getting up out of bed in the morning. One tends to drop about ten or fifteen years after the first cup or two of coffee.

Pete-
That's a good story, glad it worked out ok.

I thought that looked like a Mad Mike overhaul, he did mine in 2006 and told me the same thing, it would be his last O-300!

Okanagan Aero does nice work on oil pans, they did mine as well.

Nice looking engine and Mike does a great job with the documentation too.

I like the baffle retainers shown there. Do you still use the springs, or a threaded rod ?

I should have told my wife what I was doing as she seemed quite concerned when she walked into the garage.

Didn't help that we've been watching Dexter in the evenings.
