It's probably the most reliable instrument in my plane other than the compass.

Remember to carefully note the shank length versus thread length compared to the original AN7. In order to insure proper torque, you may have to add a washer or two. (The nut may otherwise run up against the shank, due to the L-19 using a thicker main leafspring than the 170 series.)

I have mine with the ring on the top. It seems like it woudl be a real pain if the ring was on the bottom.

Oh, and don't forget to use a steel lock nut. No nylocks as they have been known to work lose.

Aryana wrote:Thanks George. Also, I've seen them installed with the eye hole on the bottom. It that ok to do even though it goes against general accepted practice of bolts being inserted downwards when possible?
In the L-19 installation the eyebolt was installed eye DOWN. This is to secure the aircraft to shipping-decks and standard aircraft tie-down areas. ( Keep in mind that, from a purist's view... the tie down is for the purpose of tying an airplane DOWN. Therefore the tie down anchor should be directly beneath the tail. With the eye UP... you are actually allowing the airplane tail to lift up before most of the rope slack is taken up.)
This is not convenient for the person who drives in their own tie downs on grass. Those folks generally favor the eye UP. (Mine is up....but everytime I use a public tie down place the rope has to pass around one side or the other of the messy leafsprings to reach the tie down. If the eye was Down...that would not be a problem and the (my own) rope would stay cleaner.)

I blame Greg and his 170 restoration thread last year for this.

yeah. at this point, all I've bought is a bunch of 3M pads an solvent.
I figure I have a while before I have to buy the headliner.

Picked up a Garmin Aera 510 last week. Now I have to figure out where to mount it.

I mounted mine directly on top of the instrument panel where it is similar to a heads up display. (But I have a '53 model and my mag compass is mounted within the floating panel. Yours might be on top of the panel already and may preclude mounting it there.)
I don't have a pic of my Aera 510 readily available to post but here's a pic of my previously-mounted 196 in the same location.):

The 510 is a much cleaner presentation and even less obstruction to vision, but even the 196 was a good install.

It is connected to the avionics master thru the hand-hold well in the center of the upper panel. I drilled a hole (similar to/think of a "drain hole" in that depression/well) and installed a grommet for the power lead. The 510 of course has no visible antenna. The unit is mounted using the ball/socket mount and sticks to the panel with industrial strength VELCRO. When I park the plane elsewhere I simply unplug it, and remove the 510 and carry it in my flight bag.
