The top of my center door has horizontal tracks on the hangar and rollers on the top corners of the door that run in the tracks so when the door is opened, the bottom of the door swings out and the top rolls straight back 5-1/2’ toward the rear. ...
I think my Port-A-Port is an earlier model . It's s/n 247. Being hinged on top will make adding a garage door opener more challenging.

Wow Gary-
Mine is nothing like that. Looks like it will take a little head scratching to make an opener work on that one.

An automatic opener is a ways down the priority list. ... Might be easier to get a gym membership and stick with the manual door method.

My more immediate concern is getting it properly anchored. The county building department's standard is that it withstand 90 mph winds with gusts to 110 mph. There is also a snow load standard it must meet. Does anyone have documentation that would substantiate that Port-A-Port hangars meet these standards? Any written Port-A-Port directions available for how to anchor the hangar?

I got no documentation whatsoever with mine but mine is at a municipal airport and I’m sure they had a similar requirement. I asked the developer years ago how they anchored the hangars and he told me they drove 3/4”dia x 4’ steel rods into the ground at every corner thru the existing anchor tabs on the hangar frame, dropped flat washers over the exposed rod to lay on the frame, and welded the rods to the washers. Several years ago a huge wind came thru the airport that caused damage to every other type of hangar at the airport and not one out of the 30 or so Port-A-Ports was damaged.

Gary-
I figured out how you can put an electric door opener on your hinged door when you decide to install one! PM me when you’re ready.

Don’t keep it a secret, Richard! (If it’s legal to post)....

That door looks mechanicallty similar to the hydroswing doors, and the first thing that popped into my mind was the small hydraulic units sold for dump-trailers.

PM sent. I was thinking something similar when looking at the hydraulic cylinders of the front end loader of my Kubota.

I bought my 170 N170AK 2 1/2 yrs ago from Keith who was a part of this forum. Flew her to Alaska from Tennessee. I have been flying and getting to know the bird very well before I decided what if any mods I wanted. Made up my mind and this is what is getting installed right now.
1. Sportsman Stol.
2. RIght wing landing taxi lights, Mimicking the left wing lights.
3. Baggage door.
4. Skis tab kit from Atlee Doge in Anchorage Ak.
5. V brace , From Atlee Dodge also.

want list is .
Jump seals from LAKEVUE
AND of course a bigger higher HP motor and constant speed prop.

This should all be completed by 3-23-21.
Airplane will be stripped of paint this summer then apply a original 53 paint scheme and polish her.

The baggage door mod is one of the best mods to do. You will be surprised how much more the wife’s junk she will be able to load. I have a small tool box I always carry with the odd part like spare spark plugs [2 of] etc . This box is about 18ins long by 8ins high and 6 ins wide . It’s made of light weight plastic . We were all packed up ready to go and my tool box was lying on the hangar floor . Hey ,who took that out? As I was pointing to the tool box . “is it really necessary” I was asked . Now if I didn’t have that door she wouldn’t have been able to lift it over the back seat .

AeroLED Pulsar NS, Sun ‘n Fun show special. I haven’t had anticollision lighting since the rebuild, as I couldn’t make up my mind about which to get at the time. I seem to remember Del telling me that they ran an extra circuit to power strobes, and I still have the breaker switch for the old rotating beacon, so installation should be relatively easy. I did get the TSO version, so approval should just be a logbook entry.

Recently two adjacent t-hangars on the other side of the runway came on the market, and I picked them up as a new home for ‘98C so I can make room in my home hangar to pick up the pace on my RV-7 project. They are insulated and heated so we'll still be able to fly through the winter. ‘98C will be in one, and I’ll be renting the other to a friend for his ‘53 B-model. They’ve been vacant for several years, so I’ve spent the last several days power washing the interior, and after I get a fresh coat of paint on the ceiling it’ll be ready to move in.

What a GREAT MOVE! (And smart investment, I’m sure.). Congratulations! (And smart...very smart....now you have a depreciable asset that provides income.... but look out for all the junk spare hangar space attracts.)
