Ole Pokey (172TD/170C) got new black steel brake discs; new brake pads; new ss brake lines; and new caliper "O" ring gaskets.
George, had to get these new brakes to stop this GREEN plane
Continually rolling backwards on the ramp, I suppose...

Those nice chocks will also help.

ForeFlight has made a donation to our convention auction several times and this year it was the Sentry ADSB receiver. I was bidding trying to get it to bring somewhere close to retail and wound up the last tightwad with his hand in the air  and after using it on the way home glad I have it. I had a Stratux to use on the way up and was impressed with what it did, just didn’t like the box and antennae sticking up from the dash. GPS accuracy went from 5-10 meters with just the ipad to 3 with the Stratux and 1 with the Sentry. The Sentry is about the size of a cigarette package with an internal battery and internal antennas, so not nearly as intrusive in the cabin. I mounted it just in front of the front doorpost so it was really almost out of sight.

62C went in for her annual today and will come out in a couple weeks with a Garmin 650 and a G5 HSI - a discreet upgrade compliments of my lovely and supportive bride as a "graduation present" for passing my IFR checkride in 62C last month.

In the last month I’ve installed new right main and tailwheel tires and tubes and new wing fuel sump valves. I’ve also got a full tailwheel spring kit just waiting for a rainy stretch to install. And... I just purchased a replacement left aileron which will get installed this winter.

Working on crossing things off my squawk list...

Rosen sunvisors. Never thought I'd spend that much on sunvisors, but my flight instructor talked me into it. His argument was compelling: "Dad, will you please buy those sunvisors when you go to OSH?"

Nice to see they're approved for installation as a minor alteration under NORSEE, no STC required.

Not today...but recently.... I bought an I-Pad Pro (to replace the ruined computers caused during convention when a storm tore the roof off our house) and Karl Towle brought me into the 21st century by turning me onto a Seattle Avionics special offer to CFI’s.... Their Fly-Q program which is priced at $20 for CFI’s. Wow! What a powerful pkg! Now all the charts VFR/IFR, traffic, terrain, TFRs, Flight-Planning, Weather, ... a complete and powerful alternative to ForeFlight and other programs at such a low price... Even I couldn’t pass this one up!

Coupled with the uAvionix SkyBeacon and SkySensor which I also recently installed... and here’s an example of how useful these things can be.
Our son Tracy is taking lessons toward a private cert. with me and his girlfriend Stephanie has expressed interest in the venture having never been in a light plane so we took a 30 min hop from our place to T82/Fredricksburg, TX to brunch at the “Hangar Hotel”. After a lovely meal we were climbing back out of T82 with another plane taking the runway immediately after our departure. We in a 172 and the other a faster low-wing Piper type. A few minutes later I noticed the Piper was at our six-o’clock and closing ....only a few hundred feet below us. He was apparently enjoying gaining on us with a view toward giving us a fly-by demonstration... although we were not communicating with each other. (See FARs regarding formation flying without coordination between aircraft.)
His tail-number was showing on my I-Pad/Fly-Q display as he closed within an estimated 1/4 mile and still gaining at virtually the same altitude. Via cockpit intercom I instructed Tracy to “turn left to 010-degrees” which would place us on a sharp-left departure from present heading to provide separation from the closely-following aircraft. The following aircraft did the same, staying in close proximity at six-o’clock and closing. Realizing that Stephanie would be listening also on the intercom ...and so as to not give her any mid-air-collision fright on her first light-plane-ride... I took a chance and, still on unicom, I called out to the other aircraft:
“November One Two Three Poppa.... are you on the frequency?”
“This is N123P, go-ahead”
“N123P— please turn right 60-degrees to provide seperation from us!”

The Fly-Q demonstrated the new departure angle almost immediately.

“Sorry about that” - came over the headset from the other aircraft. I imagine the Piper pilot hadn’t considered we’d be ADS-B equipped and was startled we could see him on our display.

I deliberately did not reply. After about a minute I looked over at our 3-o’clock and pointed out the slowly-developing angle-of-departure of the Piper as we were now seperated by about a mile and as it continued to grow smaller. I showed Tracy the I-Pad display and we both appraciate the usefulness of the new toy.... and I now feel a bit warmer about ADS-B.

Even curmudgeons can learn progress.

And we continued on-course to our home for a nice flight.

Update: 62C came back from the shop with a fresh annual and panel update. I had the shop boroscope the engine while the plugs were out and everything looked great: the exhaust valves were healthy and the cylinder walls had good, consistent cross-hatching. All compressions were tight. Great news for a 900+ hour engine, and that will give us a baseline to compare to this time next year when we do it again. Out came the KX125 nav/comm, the ILS head and the vac-driven DG (which are now in a box under my desk) and in went the Garmin 650 and G5. There were some issues with the old Flightcom intercom that necessitated an unplanned spend on a new intercom (actually a budget PS Engineering audio panel/intercom) but that was probably something that should have been done anyway based on some audio issues that were starting to creep in. I now need to spend some quality time with my instructor to build new muscle-memory with the upgraded equipment before using it for anything but the clearest of weather. Unless something unforeseen happens this should be the last elective spend we do on 62C, at least for a while. She's ready for another 70 years of service.

To me owning a aeroplane is like standing under a freezing shower tearing up $100 dollar bills trying to keep warm. The cost never ends . I have had the aircraft just where I wanted it and then some thing comes out ,new STC or SB or such. So the process starts all over again. The secret is do not add them up as it can be frightening .[self induced heart attack]

Brian, I’ve been thinking along the same lines, adding a G5 as an HSI and keeping the vacuum attitude indicator. Garmin literature says it can be done that way, but this is the first one I’ve seen. I’m happy enough with my existing KX155/KI209 combination so I was thinking about a GPS175 and a stand-alone second comm.

Miles,

Have you considered the Garmin GNC 355. It is a gps and comm in one with the smaller form factor like the 175.

G-5s are good boxes but as an alternative, the $4995 Aspen E5 will now have HSI in the spring 2020, which is Aspen's comparable model to having two G-5s. And the Aspen will easily fit in the center C170 instrument panel holes. Aspen finally realized they screwed up by not having HSI and will be including it at no extra charge.

The vacuum system can be left or removed with the Aspen E5 and it is good for IFR.
