Antique Airplane Association Fly In

Postby MarcR » Mon Sep 02, 2019 2:21 pm

Returned from the Antique Airplane Association fly in at Blakesburg, IA late yesterday afternoon. A great weekend and 170's were well represented. As my wife and I were heading to the airplane to depart, we were stopped by some very fine gentlemen (it was because of my new Cessna 170 t-shirt) from the IC170A and had a very nice chat with them.
On the flight home it occurred to me that of the many 170's there, we had met only 3 pilot/owners. For those who attend Blakesburg, would there be any interest in getting together sometime during the event? An informal meet and greet under the wing of one our airplanes? Somewhere on the airfield? Ottumwa?
If there is any interest, what would be the best way to spread the word of time and place? Hang a note on a wing tie down?
We're open to any ideas.
Cheers,

It sounds like a fine idea. I only met one 170 owner hanging around their aircraft, and that was as they were leaving on Thurs.

Is there a popular motel in Ottumwa where the 170 crowd stay? We could either post something in the schedule of events or leave a note on each 170 for an impromptu get together.
I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Marc, Great idea. We managed to gather 10 of us for a group picture Saturday but there were nearly that many that we knew that were already gone as well as several we didn’t know. I think meeting on the field might be the best idea as folks are pretty scattered at night. At least five of us were staying in Albia and several camped on the field. This was my first time to go and I had a great time. Heck my wife even said she would like to go again!

You're right about meeting on the field. Best way to contact everyone at Blakesburg? Wish we had known about the picture Saturday. Next year for sure.

I hear the Hotel Ottumwa has a pretty good restaurant. There is a great BBQ joint within easy walking distance of the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express that has a “back room” we might be able to reserve. The White Buffalo in Albia- don’t know anything about it. Next year I’ll try to post ahead of time to get a consensus if attendees are interested in a get together, and where.

Those all sound like good ideas. I like the motel idea. Might give us the opportunity to enjoy a BYOB refreshment after a long day at the airport. I have dined at the White Buffalo and thought it was a bit pricey. But that's just my opinion.

It was hard to find folks around their airplanes. Lots to see and do as well as interaction with people around the flight line.

We missed many of you as we were only there on Friday, so we’d endorse an informal gathering!

Karen and I were there for the first time as well, but we were so far down the north 40 that we didn’t spend any time at the airplane between breakfast and bedtime. I think if we just coordinate here on the forums before next year’s event we can do much better at meeting up.

I agree, and that is a beautiful 170 you have.
