AirVenture 2019

Postby epeter786 » Wed Jul 03, 2019 3:32 pm

Hey Folks,

This will be my first time flying with my family into the convention in the 170. Does vintage camping fill up? Are the stories of getting turned away for those camping in the north and south 40s?

Thanks!

Yes Vintage WILL fill up. They expanded the S40 this year. I’ve never stayed up north.

I flew in last year and due to the fiasco on the Sunday arrival re-directed and camped at the Fond du Lac airport. I'll be flying up again this year and plan to stay at Fond du Lac again ... had a tremendous experience camping there. Looking forward to seeing as many of the membership up there as I can.

Milne CC Pocock and I will be there with the STOL demo group. Come down to the “Fun Fly Zone” and say hi and watch some highly impressive -170 flying.

The north 40 general aviation camping and GA parking does fill up, and they do turn people away. Although I’ve never heard of the vintage area filling up to the point they turn people away. They just keep parking people farther and farther south. They have also made infrastructure improvements on the south 40 over the last couple of years. Being way down south does put you a long way from show center, it is inconvenient, but manageable. I’ve been camping at OSH for over twenty years and have never had an issue with a vintage parking. Last year it got crazy on the Sunday before opening day, the weather was the issue, not the arrival procedure, or parking. I live only 1 hour away from OSH by 170, and I frequently commute to the air show, depending on the weather. So I sometimes fly the FISKE VFR arrival 2 or 3 times each convention, and last year was the first time I had to hold. Again it was a weather issue. Hopefully we don’t repeat that situation ever again. Have fun!

Have attended twice, last two years, first time, not deep south 40 and last year thanks to Dan Wood in vintage. Going to try to make another run this year, Sunday arrival last year was very sporty, hoping for better weather this year. Last year I was parked beside a really nice family from Georgia (Friends of Jim and Lolly I believe). The Wed night before the storm rolled in, I mentioned to the Dad, if there was trouble with the planes we would help each other out. I think they had a tarp over their wing and a large tent. Before I went to bed at 09:30, I pumped my air mattress to max thinking I might be floating in the morning and ended up sleeping through the entire storm. In the morning their tent was down and the entire family except for one young male (who slept in the plane) had sought shelter in the RV park. I felt rather bad about it.
Steve bringing the RV or tenting it, either way hope to see you two there

Hi Jim,
Katie and I will be there. We plan to take the camper up a week or so before Airventure starts, then fly and or drive up on Saturday or Sunday before the show. If you have some spare time come by and visit us at C77, Poplar Grove, IL. Looking forward to seeing you.

As others just said, it's rare that Vintage camping fills up. If there's been a lot of rain and grounds are flooded, then it might happen. They opened more ground for camping this year, so I'd think it's even less likely than before. Highest risk for being turned away is arriving on Sunday afternoon.

Getting camped way down south is annoying, but it beats not being there. A benefit of the remote location is that it's the perfect spot to watch late afternoon warbird fly-bys. They turn base to final right in front of you. Much better than show center.

I'm planning to arrive Tuesday or Wednesday.

170 forum

Joe Scholes asked me to post that the 170 forum will be held Tuesday July 23 from 10 to 11:15 Stage 2 GAMA
I suggest you drop by the 170 booth beforehand as I may have misinterpreted the location from Joe's note

I am not aware of Vintage area turning anyone away. EAA will turn away GA when their areas are full. GA was just N40 and is now also S40. Vintage area has expanded to the West which is not as far South. The net area for Vintage is slightly larger.

If the controllers say they are full you might try mentioning that you are a vintage aircraft (of course follow their directions). Vintage does park tail in as it fills up and park at the ends of the rows. It will get crowded so arrive early.

See everyone up there and fly safely.

Tried to arrive Saturday at opening but Wx delayed us till mid morning. I was unpleasantly surprised. Way down south in the S 40. Tough getting taxied in and that was before today’s storms. It’s not exactly SloshKosh - but not far from it!
Waiting for the rain to quit before setting up a tent. Oh well....it’s already been a good experience because of the people!

So mature of you Kyle to take being put in the Deep South unlike when I was put there two years ago. Ah it’s a learning experience. 1/3 of the way there, I’ll hunt you down when I get there

Looks like I’ll be driving in tonight. With grass parking currently closed unless you have bush wheels, I don’t want to gamble at getting a spot or fight the traffic once they open up the field.

In a previous post, there was mention of a 170 forum on Tuesday. What does that entail? Also, there was mention of a 170 booth. Where will that be?

Thanks,
Doug

In Lacrosse, waiting for camping to open for vintage or whatever. Are the camping areas really that bad?

Jim, I was walking through the area this morning. Was soggy then but seemed to be drying out quite a bit by the afternoon. Field is closed now to Vintage but might open tomorrow. Brian Olson is staying at Fond du Lac and using the shuttle bus. Maybe an option you might want to consider.
