Back To Brenham. Talk about your National Emergencies in Texas. We had a "for real" one a couple of years ago or more in central Texas when the Southern Flyer Diner on the Brenham Airport closed down - http://www.southernflyer.com/index_files/Page329.htm

Thankfully they were able to re-open a few months ago. So those of us who hung in there and endured the hardship of going without their fine sandwiches and being waited on by the girls in poodle skirts, can return to enjoy that again.

Let's try to arrive at 11R prior to 11:00 am.

If you have questions or suggestions please contact Ken Peck at (512) 468-7790 or c170ken@earthlink.net .

This is the last place I recall a fly in with a tearful Louise Bickford asking someone to “take over” for her. You’re a GOOD MAN, Ken!

It’s also Texas Independence Day and nearby to many early events celebrating that. Not too far away in Navasota (where mutineers murdered and tossed French explorer La Salle's body into the river) is "Washington on the Brazos" state park which houses the original building in-which the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed (and the event which was attended by Founding Father Stephen F. Austin, who caught cold in the unheated building that frosty day... further developing into pneumonia which killed him... and in the meantime, a hundred miles to the southwest, soon to be fallen-heros were occupying the Alamo while awaiting news of the signing.)

(there will be a test next period)

Texas members have not had great cooperation from Mother Nature this winter. She did give us a nice VFR day for our January fly-in, but we had widespread low ceilings the day scheduled for February, resulting in a complete no-show. No one even drove in.

The 2nd of March we also had wide spread low ceiling which prevented anyone from flying in, however we did have a nice group of loyal members who drove in, pictured below.

They serve wonderful food at the Southern Flyer at the Brenham,Texas airport and all the pretty waitresses wear poodle skirts, making it a great place to go for lunch.

Sheila Wyborny give us an update on plans for our upcoming Christmas party in Bryan, Texas, and there was discussion about the convention at Newton in June. We are hopefull everyone can attend both.

Attending the fly-in/drive-in at Brenham, Texas the 2nd of March were: Wendell & Sheila Wyborny, Ina Vleeshouwer, Naomi Goodlett, Ken Peck, Bob Jolley and Richard Pulley.

After lunch, Ina and I drove over to Washington-on-the-Brazos to join in on the 183 year anniversary celebration of signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico. Very inspiring what those patriots did for the future of Texas and the nation without help from anyone but themselves. Very inspiring.

It was a perfect day for the celebration, gloomy, low clouds, warm, but no rain, easy to imagine the exact same conditions as 183 years ago.

Thanks for the pics, Richard!

Back in 1836 though, it was not warm. Legend has it that Founding Father Stephen F. Austin caught his fatal cold/pneumonia there that day. It's 22-degrees Fahrenheit here in Central Texas this morning. Brrrr…..

You’re welcome, George.

I’m sure it was cold and clammy there this morning as well.
