East Coast get together?

Postby rusbac » Fri Jan 13, 2017 2:15 pm

Texas and NM are much too far for me to reach from Boston. Would anyone be interested in an informal East Coast 170 get together sometime this summer? I count at least 5 170's within 50 miles of me.

I'm just up the road in New Hampshire waiting for Alton Bay to get the ice thick enough to open up a runway.

I'm hoping to land at Alton Bay if conditions are right. Any tips for tailwheel operations on ice other than "Come in slow" and "Don't rely on the brakes"?

As for dates and locations, I'm open to suggestions. My knowledge of fun places to fly drops off significantly once I get south of NYC. I've had good luck at Reading, PA (RDG). They have an air museum, a friendly FBO, and hotel and restaurant on the field.

I'd be interested...If we want to get together at KIPT, I could set up a tour of the Lycoming Factory possibly. Of course that means I wouldn't get to fly!

Hi All
That sounds like a good idea. A get together in the northeast. New York is only a couple hours away.

OK, I'm back!

I propose we have an informal gathering of 170's at the WWII airshow in Reading, PA. Which is scheduled for June 2-4th at KRDG. I've never been to this airshow but it looks like they will have a lot of interesting WWII aircraft in attendance.

There is a hotel and restaurant on the field, and many more within 5 miles of the airport. The FBO is friendly and has Hertz rental cars. I can organize a dinner at a local restaurant for Saturday night. If there is interest, I can try to organize a more formal "discussion forum" time for attendees, however I don't have the technical expertise to give a lecture myself.

Airshow information is here: http://www.maam.org/maamwwii.html
Fly in information is here: http://www.maam.org/wwii/pilot_info.htm

Christine. If you have an event at Reading I will make every effort to attend but I am not sure that the WWII weekend is a great idea. First off I am sure the local hotels were booked months ago as it is a very large event. Also there are members who prefer not to fly into such a large event. Sandy W and I hosted an fall 170 get together at New Garden airport about 30 miles south for 3 years but we got a little discourage as attendance dropped off with each year despite our best efforts. You might consider something close to NYC which could draw people from our area and your area. Possibly a 170 day at Rhienbeck. I am definitely not trying to discourage you just trying to be helpful and hopefully you can pull off a successful event. Bill K

Hey Bill,

We'd love to have you at the event if you are available. All of those are good suggestions for future events, and I hope you'll give hosting another try sometime this summer. I want to help bring more events to the Northeast, and this happens to be the time and place that I'm available.

It seems attendance is dropping at most TIC170 events, so the worst that can happen is I go enjoy the airshow solo. At best, we make connections with a new crowd of pilots who happen to enjoy something different than the standard hamburger fly-in. Like me!

If you decide to stay overnight, there are plenty of rooms available in Reading. However, the hotel directly on the airport is booked solid (as you would expect).

Hope to see you there!
