Is the C291502-0101 engine primer the same as, or at least usable in place of, the 0311538-8 part listed in the IPC?

Miles, yes it should be usable in place of 0311538-8, which is now superceded by C291502-0104. All of the Kohler primers function the same way, although some have a little longer stroke than others. But the stroke length just affects how many times you need to pump it to get the same amount of prime to the engine. Other than stroke length, the difference in Kohler models is in the knob type, style and color (metal, plastic, smooth, knurled, etc), and fuel line connections (some have integral male flare fitting, some female NPT threaded ports and some integral male ball-type fittings). The C291502-0101 and -0104 both appear to be the same length and have the same integral male flare fittings. It looks like the only difference is the type and/or color of knob. So they should be interchangeable. If it fits behind your panel and easily connects to your same primer line fittings, you should be good to go.

Thank you Gene. The primer on the new-to-me ‘54 B-model I’m partnered in is bound up and very difficult to operate. We actually broke the primer knob off trying to get the engine started on the early morning start (OAT mid-30s) after an overnight stop on our way home with the airplane. (Yes, we had the knob in the unlocked position, and for some reason the accelerator pump wasn’t doing the job, but that’s a different issue :wink:.) We resorted to using a pair of pliers on the knob shaft and had to grip the knob shaft so tightly that I’m afraid we buggered it up beyond being able to replace just the knob. I haven’t been able to find the original part or the -104 replacement, but have found a -101 replacement (from a 180, I think) at Beegles. It looks a bit longer than the one in the airplane now, but I think it will work ok.

I prefer the metal knobbed Kohler primers as you don't need to worry about the knob coming off. The Kohler K-2402-2 is a metal knobbed one with integral male flared line fittings like the ones on stock 170's.
