Avcon Lord engine mounts replacement...

Post by echodelta »

Hello All:
I think it's time to change the Lord engine-to-mount isolators on my mid-time Avcon 180HP Lycoming 170B.
I would appreciate any guidance and reference material, including the elusive Avcon drawings,
which I understand are here to members somewhere, but I cannot find....
Thanks in advance! Eddie

The engine mount or the Lord mounts (rubber bushings) between the mount and engine?

Avcon drawings here:

Engine-to-mount isolators are Lord J-3804-28. They're expensive. I know of no cross-referenced alternative part.
Mount-to-firewall isolators are stock as shown in the parts catalog. They're not expensive.

thanks for the drawings. I got the hardware list from them, excellent!
It looks like the lower bolts will be difficult to replace, not much room to slide them out.
Anyone have experience with this and can share any tricks or secrets?...

Lots of wiggling, prying, swearing, and luck usually helps line up the bolts. It's one of those things that doesn't fit until it does. There is a torque spec on the bolts also.

The mount kits are expensive. That being said the donuts themselves are the same as used in most other mount kits, just the spacer is different.

I don’t remember any specific techniques, but I see this subject talked about on Van’s Air Force forums all the time, as most RVs use Lycomings. You don’t have to be a member to search and read all of the forums. http://www.vansairforce.com/community/index.php

The bolts in the top mounts aren’t fun either. Somehow they designed the engine mount weldments without a clear shot for the bolts to go straight in. You’ll probably have to lift the engine and move it around to make space.

Lord p/n J-3804-28 refers to an assembly that consists of three pieces: 2ea. J-3049-35 bonded mounts plus 1ea. J-12333-2 spacer. The only part number you can see when the assembly is installed on the airplane is J-3049-35, molded into the rubber.

Assemblies J-3804-20, -27, and -28 (used on various Pipers, Mooneys, Commanders, and the Avcon) all use the J-3049-35, but different spacers. So if the -20 or -27 is cheaper than a -28 you could buy them and use the -35 rubber parts.
