Gen. failure and ER 14-50 install

Post by eskflyer »

While flying over big water and mountains in AK i lost the Gen. shut off all electric and proceeded on home. when diagnosing found the end fitting on the field wire on gen. was not crimped properly when ever it had been installed. wire was ready to fall out of terminal. Field coil was burned up on gen, so i ordered the Hartzell ER14-50 alt. kit. If you elect to go this route make sure and order the P#632050 pair of bushings to go in the gear for the gen/ alt . luckily my IA had a set.The original ones in the gear i took off the Gen. were worn out. Rewired everything and installed regulator, installed a 5 amp breaker switch for alt. field and fired her up . It is good now she charges at a idle. Accomplished all under the guidance of my IA in a afternoon.
total cost to install was $804.

You were very fortunate in diagnosis - and a clear uncomplicated Repair.

What make and model aircraft were you flying?
