Elevator

Post by cvj774 »

I received a call from my machnic saying that the torque tube on my left elevator was unrepairable. I am on the road and hon't have access to my documents. First is this the right part number 0534109? Next I would appreciate any guidance in finding the part. 170B/1952.

Carl,
That's a good number for the left torque tube. I did a quick search and couldn't come up with one online. I think you may have better luck looking for p/n 0534100, the left elevator assembly. Harvest the parts you need from that. There's one for sale on eBay now but it shouldn't be too hard to find a damaged one for sale at salvage yards at a better price.

I'd be interested to know what damage your control tube has. This is not a common issue with B models. A models and '48 170s the rib in side the elevator rots. Not so much the B model.

I had the right elevator reskined with no problem. The left had to much corrosion in the tube to be reused

Call Del Lehmann at Mountain Airframe in Mena, Arkansas. He will probably have the answer you are looking for, either where to get the parts or send it to him for repair. He does excellent work.

Another idea is to call Air Repair (662) 846-0228 and ask them if p/n 0634106-1, the left torque tube on the L-19, is the same part as on the C-170B. It's shown in fig. 160-10 of the L-19 IPC. They usually have pretty reasonable prices at Air Repair.

I didn’t think about Air Repair, great guys, they built a Jacobs engine for me. They probably have jigs to rebuild it correctly.

For reference the L-19 steel ribs on the elevator torque tubes are 0634106-4 and 0634106-8.

The Air Repair L-19 part was the solution. Thanks to all.

Here are photos of the removed shins and torque tube. Note the corrosion on the tube. I don't know how you would ever
see this on a normal inspection.
I would like to give credit to the shop that did the work. Tail Wheel Ventures LLC, 705 Rod Sullivan Rd, Sanford NC 37330, 919-291-4408

Hello, I have a Cessna Birddog that is in need of a left elevator and was told that the 170B is the same and would interchange. If you know about this I would appreciate a contact.

I feel quite confident in saying that the C-170B elevators are interchangeable with the L-19 elevators. Not 100% sure, but close to it. In this thread Carl confirmed that the left torque tube, p/n 0534109, on the C-170B matches the L-19 torque tube, p/n 0634106-1. I have an L-19 left elevator tip assembly, p/n 0634100. It is symmetrical and, I assume, matches the L-19 right elevator tip assembly except for the different counterbalance weight. The C-170B left elevator tip assembly is p/n 0534100-6 and the right elevator tip assembly is p/n 0534101-9. As with the L-19, these parts appear to be interchangeable- left and right - except for the counterbalance weights. The L-19 tip assembly is a perfect match with the C-170B assembly. The elevator balance weights on the L-19 are p/n 0634124 for the left side and 0634123 for the right side. As one can see in the photo below, the weight of these L-19 lead blocks match the specs for the C-170B (LH p/n 0534100-9, and RH p/n 0534101-13) listed in SNL-86-44.
