170A Original Brown Door Panel (hidden, but found!)

Post by brian.olson »

The new door panels for 62C arrived from Airtex on Thursday and my wife and I spent the afternoon today installing the Pilot and Co-Pilot panels. Once the new seat coverings arrive we'll install the rest of the panels, carpet and headliner.

An interesting surprise awaited us as we looked closer at the original panel. According to the logs, the interior was replaced in the mid-80s (its current blue interior). However, it appears - at least on the door panels - that interior was applied over the top of a previous blue interior, and THAT interior was applied over the original brown that is referenced in the delivery documentation. What an amazing find to stumble upon. It appears that the lower third of the brown interior was cut away when the first blue interior was applied.

Note: you can see in the upper right hand portion of the new Airtex photo that we've stripped and re-painted some of the trim. Once we remove everything from the interior of the plane, and before we install the carpet and the remaining wall panels, we'll finish stripping the door frames and re-painting.

Some photos for your forensic pleasure:
