An engine monitor isn't necessary but I'm sure glad I have one (JPI EDM-700). Without going into the full list of reasons, I use it pre-flight on run-up, leaning and setting power in flight, and for identifying and debugging ignition problems. I flew many years with a monitor on a TSIO-520 and got used to having the info. Yes, they're expensive and the airplane will fly perfectly well without an engine monitor in the panel.

I feel more strongly about the fuel flow gauge. It was the first addition I made after buying the airplane. I want to know how much fuel I have at all times.
