Cessna OEM Control Lock 0511142

Post by bjoness »

I recently acquired a Cessna OEM Control Lock that was supposed to be a 0511142 lock. However, the lock is too short to use on the top of the control wheel as shown in the parts manuals (170 Index 59-1, 170A Index 71-1, 170B Index 98-1). Overall length of the lock is 31 inches from the top of the control wheel brackets to the bottom of the rudder brackets. I'm beginning to suspect that the control lock actually might be a 0413243 control lock for Cessna 120 and 140 aircraft (parts manual Index 66-1).

Does anyone have a confirmed original control lock 0511142 (170 and 170A) or 0511142-5 (170B) that can tell me the overall length? Or a confirmed 120/140 lock 0413243 and can tell me that dimension?

Was going to use the lock in my early 1956 172. The floor stop for the lock is factory installed (but not shown in the 172 parts manual). My 170A, on the other hand, which is supposed to have the floor stop installed, does not. Go figure!

This sort of situation is so common that it leads me to believe there's a LOT of mx that is never properly recorded in half-century-old airplanes. Usually it's because the item was not approved, or not installed/removed by an authorized person. On a few rare occasions I've been able to determine it was simply overlooked during otherwise "heavy" mx which was undertaken simultaneously.
In all cases, it's improper and a reason that some owners, believing their airplanes are "original" or "no damage history" are simply mistaken.

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)

I have two. I’ll measure them when I get home this weekend.

Sounds like you may have one meant for a 140.

The one I have is 33.5 inches tip to tip

There is no part number on it and it does fit the 170B

I just need the part that secures the control lock to the floor, does anyone have that piece?

Preferred Air Parts and Texas Air Salvage have p/n 0511142-2, control lock stop angle.
