vbrace 170b

Post by swixtt »

wondering who has a vbrace in their beautiful 170b? if so, anyone look at the attach to the front carry through gusseted area and see if rivets are removed to allow the fastening of this brace or if the holes are new? reason i ask is mine is a factory float plane (on wheels now) without this brace. it was there at one time but not since i've owned it. the two holes i'm questioning are left empty... no bolts, no rivets. wondering if rivets were removed and should have bolts in there regardless if the brace is installed or not.
of course i don't have a picture but i'll fix that if i can remember to take a pic.
thanks fellas for any input.

I believe the brace is bolted to the front spar by the same bolts used to bolt the front spar wing attach blocks. At least that's how the factory did it on my 172XP.

I agree with Jim as mine is attached the same way as his.

Got a pic of the holes? I've seen in pics flying wires used instead of tubes but have never seen it in person. Possibly they are installed in a different manner. What about the dash' ?
Where are the holes located there? What I wonder about are the handholds, I think but really I'm just guessing that some models had two handholds and others had a single in the middle. If the single, I guess it would require a re-work to plant the base of the v-brace.

The "flying wires" V-brace go between the wing spar attach bolts and the upper motor mount bolts.

That is probably the best V-brace configuration, mechanically, since they connect two major structural attach points, but not the best overall since you can't use them as a handhold and they have to be adjusted correctly.

The tubular V-brace bolts to the top of the glare shield above the instrument panel, which although "structural" is not very robust.
