Electrical Tape Preference

Post by MoonlightVFR »

Generator to Alternator conversion 1979.

Still Working great decades later.

There was a little crudeness to installation. Existing wiring from 1954 converting to wiring in new Kit.

Three wires from original to new connected with a common bolt/nut and taped with electrical tape. Looks poorly
after all these years.

I would like to clean connecting surfaces an retape if this is proper procedure.

Question to forum is what is preferred best electrical tape to use?

Did a wiki on "electrical tape" Wish that I had not gone there.

Electrical tape is frowned-upon in aircraft. You might consider heat-shrink as a better option.

This stuff/ style is very acceptable for use in aircraft it's almost as good as heat shrink.

Depending on your generator to alternator conversion this C-172/O-300 harness looks like a quality product. If you're interested in having an aircraft quality wiring job it's going to be cheaper to buy (or have your A&P fabricate) something like this than to purchase the correct tools to fabricate a harness yourself.

Jim
Thank you for the AIRMET post.

Opens up a new understanding of high performance tape.

I knew modern technological tapes had to be available. I just did not know how to google," Self fusing Triangular Silicone tape"

One version trademarked " F 4 Tape" ... Has to be good stuff repair hydraulic lines on active F 4 Phantom Jets!
I had no idea.

I want this in my tool chest. Sold.

George if there is an F4 active it won't be long if they are using this tape on the hydraulic lines. :D

Obviously the quoted content about F4 tape was from a vintage article.

But still some one was very excited about this advanced tape to name it F4.

Did you ever hear disparaging remarks made about Ford Model A and baling wire. Who would tweet such a thing?
Airplanes and Tape. I don't think so.

Decades a go I was touring in middle East, " St Louis, MO" was on my tour tag. Some one approached me and stated
you know how to build them But we know how to FLY THEM! Narrow country, all commercial flights minimum 30 degree bank. I think they were addressing the F-15 Eagle.

I suspect it might have been used for "chafe tape" beneath a hydraulic-tank-access-inspection-cover.
