Painting Stencils

Post by drewsey4516 »

I'm trying to locate the artwork or stencils for the art deco style "170" painted on the door 0f '53 170's. Does the Association have that artwork in it's database? If not, does anyone know a source for the artwork or stencil's? Thanks!

The drawing he's looking for is 0500018-1. The link "000 Cessna dwg 0500018 170_logo for 53.jpg" in the library doesn't seem to be working. I'm guessing it matches the "170" that you have drawn up Ryan and the "170" in the 1952 blueprints.

Gary, 304-1 Cessna dwg 0500018-2 170_logo for 53.jpg.pdf now works in both places it resides now. the -2 drawing is the tail logo not the door logo which is 0500018-1.

Looks like the drawing Ryan did is actually for a '53 if your read the detail in the actual blue print. The tail logo is likely the same ''52 to '53 and the larger 170 in the '52 cowl is likely the same shape but not the same size. The complete '52 paint scheme package we have should be consulted for the '52

Pretty sure I've got a set of those stencils. I'll try to find them and let you know.

Check out the Aerographics catalog. How close is item 6A on page 16 to what you're looking for? I used them for all the paint masks on my recent rebuild and was extremely pleased with the results. The catalog didn't have all the exact sizes I wanted but they were able to scale each one to my specification. They do decals as well as paint masks.

SInce this topic came up and my plane just went into the paint shop I figured this was a good time and place to ask. I was looking at the drawings of the 52 and some of the dimensions are hard to read. Do we have better details on the dimensions or is this the best drawing to go by?

Attached is an overview of the four photocopies I have. I'll attach some close-ups as well. The clarity of printed dimensions leaves a lot to be desired. As a group we need to take notes and pictures of these painting details when stripping the paint from our aircraft reveals the "shadow" of an original paint job. You will notice that my notes from the door differ slightly from the Cessna drawing. The drawings do say, "For dimension not given scale drawing."

Thanks Gary. That's a good point to check if the original faded marks are still there. My plane is being stripped this week. I will check and see if I can make out the original stripes and take some measurements. It's worth a look.

Glad to help. Are you planning on an original color? Here's a couple more detail shots, On the bottom of the cowl the fraction is illegible. To scale it I measure the 3" segment on the cowl at 0.75" and the bottom 3 and blurred fraction at 1 1/32" (1.03125"). Unfortunately, when scaled, that comes to just over 4". So my guess is that the lower measurement is 3 and 7/8".
